Role Overview
Amazon Web Services (AWS) is seeking a Senior Applied Scientist passionate about generative AI (GenAI), machine learning, and cybersecurity to help develop cutting-edge AI/ML solutions that defend AWS infrastructure from sophisticated security threats. This role involves analyzing security data using advanced AI techniques and designing automated systems that detect and mitigate threats at scale.
Key Responsibilities
- Engineer and deploy AI/ML applications that analyze petabyte-scale threat data with real-time inference capabilities.
- Conduct detailed data investigations and create prototypes to uncover previously unknown security issues.
- Define and lead independent research agendas addressing complex and ambiguous security challenges.
- Advocate for and implement innovative technologies solving scientific problems in cybersecurity.
- Build team consensus balancing scientific rigor with the urgent operational requirements of security.
- Mentor colleagues both technically and professionally to enhance team capabilities.
- Contribute to the scientific community by publishing patents and peer-reviewed articles, and presenting research internally and externally.
About the Team
This team operates within the Amazon Active Defense organization, aiming to automate security threat detection and mitigation across AWS in near real-time. It collaborates closely with software developers, security engineers, and data scientists to protect internal AWS resources from advanced malicious actors.

Basic Qualifications
- PhD degree or Master’s with six or more years of applied research experience.
- Demonstrated leadership in engineering teams through mentoring or technical leadership roles.
- At least three years’ professional experience building machine learning models for practical business use.
- Hands-on experience deploying AI/ML models to production systems with observable customer impact.
- Proficiency in programming/scripting to solve real-world problems, preferably Python.
- Must be a citizen of an EU member country.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience applying AI/ML to cybersecurity, fraud detection, or similar domains.
- Development and deployment of generative AI applications.
- Familiarity with large-scale distributed systems such as Hadoop and Spark.
- Experience using AWS cloud services like SageMaker, Bedrock, EMR, Glue, Lambda, and S3.
