Position Overview

We invite an early-career scientist to join our Research & Development team located in Guildford. The role focuses on assisting in the creation of practical diagnostic tools employed in food safety, environmental surveillance, and hygiene assessments. This entry-level position suits candidates holding a scientific degree and some laboratory experience who aim to enhance their expertise in applied microbiology, assay design, and product innovation.

At Hygiena, our efforts support rapid detection, identification, and monitoring technologies covering microbiology, ATP measurement, bioluminescence, and other diagnostic platforms. Your contributions will include conducting specified experiments, generating trustworthy data, and gaining insights into how research ideas evolve into products that help maintain quality, safety, and public health.

Main Duties

• Execute defined laboratory experiments to aid new product development, improvements, method optimization, and application validation.
• Apply fundamental microbiological skills including aseptic techniques, preparing media, performing dilutions, culturing, plating, and managing samples.
• Work closely with Hygiena’s products, technologies, and methodologies, especially in rapid microbial detection and bioluminescence testing.
• Accurately document observations, organize experimental results in Excel, and communicate outcomes clearly to the project team.
• Ensure laboratory practices comply with SOPs, quality standards, and good laboratory hygiene, maintaining a safe, clean, and well-documented workspace.
• Develop scientific judgment by interpreting data under guidance, offering practical insights, and recommending subsequent investigative steps.

Candidate Profile

• A bachelor’s degree in biology, microbiology, molecular biology, biochemistry, or a related scientific field.
• Some laboratory experience gained through university projects, internships, placements, or initial professional roles.
• Familiarity with standard lab procedures and a keen interest in applied microbiology or diagnostic science.
• Strong attention to detail, dependable record keeping, and commitment to following prescribed methods.
• Basic proficiency with Excel and enthusiasm for converting lab results into clear, actionable data.
• A proactive, well-organized mindset with confidence to seek guidance when necessary.
