Role Overview

Join NZ Transport Agency (Waka Kotahi) as a Principal Data Engineer, where you'll drive the future of data engineering across the organization, providing visionary technical leadership on data platforms, governance, and delivery at an enterprise level. This permanent full-time position can be located in any NZTA office throughout New Zealand.

Responsibilities

• Lead strategic decisions on data engineering practices and governance to advance NZTA's data and AI capabilities.
• Mentor and develop the next generation of data engineers, fostering a culture of collaboration and technical excellence.
• Oversee the Data Community of Practice to encourage knowledge sharing and continuous improvement among teams and partners.
• Provide enterprise-wide technical leadership and assurance for complex, high-impact programs.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate possesses extensive experience in leading large-scale enterprise data engineering projects and developing technical teams. You have the ability to influence senior leadership with trusted advice on intricate technical matters, deep expertise in modern cloud data platforms including Databricks and Lakehouse architectures, and a solid understanding of data governance, privacy, security, and compliance requirements. Proficiency in SQL and programming languages such as Python, Scala, or R is essential. You are skilled at balancing immediate delivery goals with long-term platform sustainability and managing technical debt, complemented by strong stakeholder relationship skills.
