Work Summary
The City of Oviedo is recruiting for the position of Police Officer Trainee, a role designed for individuals to receive the necessary training and certifications to perform intermediate protective and support police duties. This is a full-time, onsite training role requiring attendance at the Law Enforcement Academy and successful completion of the state certification exam. The city covers the cost of the Police Academy; however, trainees must commit to a minimum two-year service contract upon certification.
Key Responsibilities
- Attend and actively participate in the Law Enforcement Academy training sessions.
- Successfully complete all instructional components and requirements of the academy.
- Pass the State of Florida Law Enforcement Certification Examination to obtain official certification.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must be at least 21 years old and a U.S. citizen.
- High school diploma or GED that fulfills state educational standards.
- Valid Florida driver's license is mandatory.
- Good physical condition with corrected vision of at least 20/40.
- Exemplary moral character with no felony or related misdemeanor convictions as defined by Florida law.
- Must meet drug and nicotine use standards and successfully pass respective screenings.
Special Requirements
- Successful completion of the Physical Abilities Test (PAT).
- Enrollment and successful participation in the Law Enforcement Academy.
- Pass a writing assessment and physical fitness test.
- Signing of a Training Reimbursement Agreement.
Knowledge and Abilities
- Familiarity with the geography of Oviedo and locations of significant city buildings.
- Capability to comprehend and execute oral and written instructions and generate detailed reports.
- Professional and courteous interaction skills with the public.
- Quick analytical thinking to adopt effective and sensible actions considering environment and safety.
- Proficiency in operating motor vehicles skillfully.
