Stellenbeschreibung
Role Summary
This position involves executing comprehensive microbiological examinations and analyses, including culture techniques, biochemical assays, enzyme immunoassays, serotyping, PCR, and whole genome sequencing (WGS) particularly focused on clinical specimens to isolate and identify enteric pathogens such as Salmonella, E. coli, Shigella, Vibrio, Listeria, and Campylobacter. The role also includes documenting quality control and assurance procedures in compliance with Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) standards. Cross-training opportunities exist in various laboratory areas such as molecular biology, virology, serology, and other microbiological testing methods to support routine procedures and provide backup coverage.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform detailed analyses of samples for molecular detection and identification of microorganisms including toxins, antigens, and nucleic acids.
- Adhere strictly to laboratory procedures for specimen handling, processing, testing, reporting, and patient record maintenance.
- Extract nucleic acids from various specimens using both manual and automated processes.
- Apply molecular techniques including PCR, sequencing, MALDI-TOF, and WGS for diagnostic testing.
- Interpret laboratory results, validate findings, and ensure precise reporting.
- Maintain comprehensive records of sample submissions and referrals.
- Conduct quality control validations on methods, materials, and equipment following lab policies.
- Manage inventory and reorder lab supplies to meet testing demands efficiently.
- Assist in generating epidemiological and statistical reports from compiled data across various time frames.
- Maintain up-to-date competence across trained testing areas.
- Comply with testing personnel responsibilities under applicable standards, including specimen processing, test execution, quality assurance documentation, and corrective actions when deviations occur.
Requirements
- Thorough understanding of microbiology principles, theories, and techniques, including specialized molecular biology methods.
- Proficient in current scientific testing procedures with the ability to troubleshoot public health laboratory challenges.
- Experienced with a wide range of technical and scientific laboratory equipment and automated analytical technologies.
- Knowledgeable in laboratory safety protocols and compliance with relevant state and federal regulations including CLIA requirements.
- Eligible for technologist certification as per Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act standards.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills with the ability to collaborate professionally.
- Capability to engage successfully in proficiency testing and quality assurance initiatives.
- Skills in compiling, analyzing, and preparing detailed laboratory reports.
Work Environment and Physical Demands
The role demands precise scientific analyses requiring advanced laboratory skills and the ability to handle complex specimens. The work involves independent judgment, use of safety equipment, and adherence to strict safety standards, given potential exposure to biohazards and chemical hazards. Protective gear may be cumbersome, requiring additional physical effort and focus. Laboratory conditions may include temperature fluctuations demanding sustained concentration under challenging environmental conditions.
Additional Information
- Employment is part-time and onsite in Indianapolis, IN.
- Applicants should possess a Bachelor's degree in Science, preferably in Biology.
- Experience includes at least two years working in laboratory settings, molecular biology lab experience is preferred.
- Benefits comprise long-term job stability, comprehensive health insurance, 401(k) retirement plan enrollment, and assistance with Green Card processing if necessary.
