Position Overview

Joining under the supervision of the Director of Project Services, the Junior Estimator plays a crucial role in supporting the creation of cost estimates for project bids. This entry-level opportunity is designed to develop core estimating capabilities including quantity measurements, cost aggregation, and subcontractor pricing coordination, while gaining practical experience with the estimation tools and software utilized by the team.

Key Duties

  • Collaborate closely with the Lead Estimator in preparing detailed estimates, tender documents, and other bid materials such as RFPs, RFQs, and RFTs.
  • Analyze proposal specifications and drawings with guidance from senior staff to ascertain the project's scope.
  • Generate cost estimates for assigned project components under the Lead Estimator’s supervision.
  • Keep methodical records of working documents and updated supplier pricing as evidence supporting the estimates.
  • Assist in sourcing subcontractor quotations as necessary.
  • Help acquire pricing information for materials and equipment rentals as required.
  • Contribute to maintaining accuracy and consistency in estimate reports for operations, management, and clients.
  • Develop proficiency in the team's estimating software, suggesting improvements where applicable.
  • Ensure assigned tasks are complete and precise, subject to review by senior estimators.
  • Participate in post-bid evaluations as needed.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Completion of a diploma or degree in construction management, engineering, quantity surveying, or a related discipline.
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills with a professional demeanor.
  • Capability to interact effectively at various organizational levels internally and with external clients.
  • Exceptional analytic, organizational, and planning abilities with keen attention to detail and precision.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Excel, MS Project, and Office suite applications.
  • Basic understanding of construction estimating techniques.
  • Eagerness to learn and take direction from experienced team members.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Possession of technical, university, or trade certifications such as electrician, lineman, or a similar field.
  • Over one year of experience in commercial construction estimating or in transmission and distribution power systems.

Work Location

This role will operate from one of our main offices located either in Abbotsford, BC or Calgary, Alberta.
