The opportunity
Hamilton City Council’s Infrastructure and Assets Group is looking for an experienced, collaborative leader to join the Asset Strategy and Information team as the Asset Management Improvement and Systems Lead. The group supports the city through the full lifecycle of infrastructure and assets, from planning through to maintenance, with a focus on resilient services that help the community today and into the future.
Reporting to the Head of Asset Strategy and Information, you will be part of a small but influential leadership group. This role carries business ownership for the council’s asset management information systems, which are used to manage physical assets such as roads, parks, buildings, and other infrastructure that support community services. You will help ensure these systems, the underlying data, and the related processes are well governed and continuously improved, while also contributing to wider asset management work across the organisation. The role includes one direct report. A major early priority will be working with Digital Services and business teams to move one of the core asset management systems to the cloud.
What you will do
- Act as the business owner for the asset management information systems, partnering closely with Digital Services on system direction, performance, and long-term sustainability.
- Drive organisation-wide improvements that enhance how the city’s physical assets are managed.
- Provide asset management guidance to teams across council.
- Help shape long-term planning by developing and embedding asset management planning frameworks and ways of working.
- Strengthen organisational capability through practical support and advice.
- Make sure policies and standards are clear, consistent, and aligned with sector practice.
- Identify, assess, and manage risks, including input into business continuity planning.
- Support collaboration across council to deliver joined-up asset management outcomes.
- Contribute to sector relationships, including engagement through Āpōpō NZ.
Why this role stands out
This is a high-impact leadership position with organisation-wide influence. You will work across teams, help shape strategy and systems, and contribute to how infrastructure is managed for a growing city. You will also be part of a collaborative leadership team focused on practical improvements and building capability across council.
Experience and capability we are looking for
You are an experienced asset management professional who can lead change, influence stakeholders, and bring people along with you. You understand how asset management information systems support strong asset management practice.
- Substantial asset management experience, ideally within local government or another complex organisation.
- Strong understanding of asset management principles, frameworks, and sector practice.
- Proven ability to lead asset management or system improvement programmes in a large organisation.
- Clear leadership capability, with confidence influencing at all levels and working across teams.
- Experience working across business units to design, implement, and embed improvements.
- A collaborative, results-driven approach and a genuine commitment to lifting asset management maturity across the organisation.
Additional information
The salary for this position is circa $120,000, depending on skills and experience.
What the council offers includes flexible working by choice through an award-winning flexible working policy, professional development opportunities, two wellbeing days each year, free health insurance through Unimed with hospital and surgery cover plus discounted family membership rates, free annual health checks and flu vaccination, the option to buy extra annual leave, reimbursement for eye tests and glasses, and discounted offers from local businesses such as gyms, cafes, dentists, hairdressers, and more.
