Head of Artificial Intelligence

About the Role

We are seeking a Head of Artificial Intelligence & Data to lead the strategic vision and technical implementation of advanced AI, machine learning, and data projects within a leading defence technology company based in Munich, Germany. This senior leadership role demands the integration of cutting-edge AI into mission-critical defence systems requiring high security and compliance standards.

Key Duties

• Develop and implement a comprehensive AI and machine learning roadmap to improve operational efficiency and decision support tools.
• Lead and expand a diverse team consisting of data scientists, machine learning engineers, and data analysts, providing guidance and mentorship.
• Design robust, scalable data infrastructure prioritizing cybersecurity and data sovereignty.
• Innovate in areas such as predictive modeling, computer vision, and autonomous systems, ensuring solutions meet complex defence operational requirements.
• Work closely with cross-functional leaders, stakeholders, and government affiliates to ensure alignment with national and international defence goals.
• Promote a culture emphasizing technical excellence, thorough research, and compliance-focused development practices.

Candidate Requirements

• Advanced degree (Master’s or PhD) in Computer Science, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, or related quantitative fields.
• Demonstrated leadership experience managing high-performing technical teams within defence, aerospace, or similarly regulated industries.
• Expertise in machine learning operations (MLOps), large language models, or large-scale data engineering.
• In-depth knowledge of the German defence industry and regulatory compliance, including security clearance procedures.
• Strong strategic insight with the capability to explain complex technical topics to non-technical audiences.
• Fluency in both German and English to effectively collaborate with local partners and government entities.
