Role Summary
The Genetic Counsellor Assistant plays a vital role within an interprofessional team by facilitating high-quality, patient-focused genetic services grounded in established standards and evidence-based protocols. This role is based at Princess Margaret Hospital, within the Genetics Program, working closely with genetic counsellors embedded in specialty clinical units to enhance patient care through effective service coordination and streamlined clinical workflow management.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage scheduling and coordinate logistics for patient appointments and genetics clinic activities.
- Gather, organize, and synthesize relevant medical and family history from multiple sources.
- Communicate with patients, families, healthcare providers, and laboratories to acquire necessary additional information.
- Develop and maintain family pedigrees as part of clinical assessments.
- Monitor genetic testing processes, track laboratory results, and manage applications for Ministry of Health funding.
- Assist with case preparation and follow-up tasks to support genetic counsellor assessments.
- Maintain and ensure accuracy of clinical databases, including data entry and quality checks.
- Perform additional duties aligned with the job role as needed.
Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Genetics, or a related healthcare field.
- Solid understanding of genetics concepts and principles.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal abilities and a customer-focused approach.
- Prior experience in a clinical genetics environment is advantageous.
- Ability to work collaboratively within a team and independently as required.
- Effective organizational and time management capabilities.
- Proficiency with computer applications relevant to the role.
- Adaptability to reprioritize and manage changing tasks on short notice.
Additional Details
- This permanent full-time position requires working 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.
- Salary ranges from $25.11 to $31.39 per hour.
- Only candidates who have successfully completed probation and maintain satisfactory attendance records are eligible.
