Job Overview
The Ohio Attorney General's Office is searching for a dedicated individual to join the Bureau of Criminal Investigation's Chemistry unit as a Forensic Scientist. This full-time position is based at the Richfield or London Laboratory and requires daily in-lab presence. BCI serves as Ohio's official crime laboratory, supporting law enforcement agencies statewide by offering expert investigative services at no cost. Staff includes special agents on 24/7 call, scientists utilizing advanced forensic technology, and specialists assisting in case resolutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Analyze and identify controlled substances and unknown chemical compounds.
- Interpret instrumentation data and charts.
- Conduct wet chemistry procedures, including extractions, thin layer chromatography, and column chromatography.
- Perform diverse chemical, biological, and microscopic tests.
- Draw conclusions and develop professional opinions based on examination results.
- Generate precise reports for law enforcement and judicial use.
- Consult with law enforcement regarding evidence analyses and findings.
- Provide courtroom testimony about evidence and analytical methods.
- Offer guidance to colleagues and agencies on analysis, testimony, and report interpretation.
- Support or direct investigators in gathering evidence.
- Prepare reagents and other laboratory chemicals.
- Undertake related duties and projects as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- A bachelor's degree in a directly related scientific discipline such as chemistry, biology, forensic science, physics, health science, or medical technology that fulfills laboratory accrediting body standards.
- Completion of coursework in organic chemistry 1 and 2 (with labs) and analytical chemistry (with lab).
- Alternatively, a bachelor's degree plus four years of relevant chemistry training and experience including at least one year of college-level chemistry (ten semester hours with labs) recognized by the laboratory system director.
- A copy of your academic transcript must be submitted when applying.
Working Conditions
Work environment may involve exposure to hazardous chemicals, explosives, firearms, drugs, decomposing tissue, bodily fluids, and infectious diseases. The role may require occasional overnight travel.
