Overview

The position of Fire Recruit with the City of Seguin involves comprehensive training and active participation in fire suppression, emergency response, and maintenance activities. This role demands engagement in responding to fire alarms, accident scenes, and various emergency incidents, as well as upkeep of station facilities and equipment.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Engage in training sessions related to fire alarms and assist in fire suppression tasks such as rescue operations, entry, ventilation, and salvage work.
  • Operate emergency vehicles including fire trucks and ambulances safely when responding to incidents.
  • Support post-fire activities including cleanup and overhaul work.
  • Perform routine maintenance, minor repairs, and cleaning of firefighting equipment, vehicles, apparatus, station, and grounds.
  • Provide emergency medical services consistent with skill level and certification.
  • Assist in cleaning and restocking supplies and equipment after emergency runs.
  • Participate in ongoing training and departmental wellness programs.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Understanding of elementary physics, chemistry, mechanics, firefighting principles and techniques, hydraulics related to fire suppression, and applicable federal, state, and local Fire/EMS regulations.
  • Adept at safely operating emergency vehicles.
  • Physical capability to swim, lift and maneuver weights up to 165 lbs including hoses, gear, and ladders; climb ladders; administer CPR; and perform strenuous tasks under adverse conditions including smoke and harsh weather.
  • Mental resilience to work at heights and in confined spaces for extended durations.
  • Ability to operate all department vehicles and equipment, read maps, maintain accurate records, foster cooperative relationships with colleagues and the public, and manage stressful situations effectively.
  • Maintain necessary certifications, hold a valid Texas driver’s license applicable to role responsibilities, and record a good driving history.
  • Obligation to be able to report for emergency duty within one hour from residence.
  • Potential exposure to hazardous or toxic materials and work environments.

Education and Certifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; college coursework in fire sciences is favorable.
  • Current EMT Paramedic certification issued by the Texas Department of State Health Services.
  • Possession of an appropriate Texas driver’s license.
  • Requirement to obtain a basic firefighter certification within six months of employment.
