Role summary

Aneurin Bevan University Health Board is hiring motivated and dependable Facilities Operatives to support services across its Monmouthshire and Blaenau Gwent sites. This is a hands-on support role that helps keep hospital environments safe, efficient, and caring. The work is varied and may include domestic cleaning, catering support, and portering duties. Full training will be provided.

You will be part of a large multidisciplinary team delivering high-quality support to patients, visitors, and staff while working in line with the Health Board’s values, dignity standards, and infection prevention requirements.

The role requires flexibility across different services and a 7-day rota, which includes weekends and bank holidays.

Key duties

Based on service needs, you may be asked to carry out some or all of the tasks below.

Domestic services

  • Maintain high standards of cleaning in both patient-facing and non-patient areas.
  • Follow agreed cleaning schedules and outcome-based cleaning standards.
  • Complete routine, specialist, discharge, and rapid-response cleaning tasks.
  • Use cleaning tools, equipment, machinery, and approved chemicals safely.

Catering support

  • Prepare simple food and drink items such as sandwiches, salads, and beverages.
  • Load and unload regenerated food trollies.
  • Check, monitor, and record food temperatures.
  • Upkeep strong food hygiene, cleanliness, and infection control practices in line with policy.
  • Clean kitchen areas, ward pantries, and service spaces.
  • Assist with retail catering, including tills and customer service.
  • Keep stock at suitable levels and store provisions, equipment, and materials safely.
  • Work collaboratively with clinical and facilities colleagues.

Portering duties

  • Move patients, including those needing sensitive transfers.
  • Transport goods, specimens, blood products, equipment, and linen between hospital areas/sites.
  • Support waste collection and environmental duties, including litter picking.
  • Receive, sort, and distribute goods.
  • Always treat patients, visitors, and colleagues with courtesy, dignity, and respect.

Pay and enhancements

This post is on NHS Band 3. The salary scale has been adjusted as part of the NHS Agenda for Change pay award for 2026/2027 and will be implemented in August 2026, backdated to 01 April 2026 where applicable.

Unsocial hours enhancements apply in addition to basic pay for shifts worked during the following times: nights from 8:00pm to 6:00am at Time + 41%, all day Saturday at Time + 41%, and all day Sunday and Public Holidays at Time + 83%. These enhancements may increase take-home pay.

Working pattern

You will be expected to work flexibly across services and cover a 7-day rota, including weekends and bank holidays. The organisation supports flexible working where possible.
