About Tourism Central Otago
Tourism Central Otago (TCO) serves as the Regional Tourism Organisation for Central Otago, dedicated to coordinating and facilitating the management and marketing of the region as a visitor destination that benefits local communities. This mission follows the Central Otago Destination Management Plan (DMP), reflecting the aspirations of local communities and mana whenua to enrich community outcomes through tourism.
Role Overview
The Destination Advisory Board comprises a Chairperson, two appointed members, and four co-opted members who represent specifically identified community sectors including the CODC Mayor or an elected councillor, a Kai Tahu representative, a tourism business owner or senior manager from Central Otago, and a youth representative aged between 18 and 30 years. The board anticipates convening up to four meetings yearly.
Responsibilities
- Provide oversight and understanding of the Central Otago Destination Management Plan's aims, objectives, and outcomes.
- Review and offer guidance on the Tourism Central Otago strategy and its work programme related to the Destination Management Plan, ensuring focused priorities achievable within designated timelines.
- Contribute expertise and maintain interest in the board’s success and tourism outcomes.
- Encourage open discussion and foster member engagement on relevant topics.
- Use personal influence and authority to assist the TCO team in fulfilling their objectives.
- Help address strategic issues and risks at board meetings as necessary.
Skills and Experience
Board appointments aim to balance management and marketing experience, combining both local and wider regional knowledge. Desired attributes include respected standing within the community, strategic vision for Central Otago, familiarity with tourism frameworks nationally and locally, project management skills, awareness of Central Government processes, understanding of regional identity and Kai Tahu values, strong partnership with mana whenua, and youth leadership capabilities.
