Role overview
This opportunity sits within a newly formed central data science group at BlackRock, created to speed up innovation in artificial intelligence and deliver organization-wide impact through data-driven problem solving. The environment combines the pace and ownership of a startup with the stability and scale of a large global parent company.
BlackRock oversees more than $6.2 trillion in assets for investors around the world, creating a broad and high-impact set of problems for data scientists and engineers across investments, sales, marketing, operations, product, user experience, and other areas of the business.
What you may work on
- Designing a dynamic pricing and automated bidding system for securities lending.
- Finding investment signals from alternative datasets to support alpha generation.
- Developing predictive models for sales and marketing use cases to better anticipate client needs and behavior.
- Applying natural language processing to pull and connect meaningful n-grams from unstructured content such as financial statements, news, and contracts.
- Working on speech-to-text analysis.
- Using graph analytics for data lineage, provenance, ontology development, and network analysis.
- Automating repetitive manual work so employees can focus on higher-value tasks.
- Supporting the firm’s policy work around algorithmic accountability and responsible data science.
Team environment
The team is expected to expand to around 20 data scientists and data engineers in the first year. It is designed as a collaborative, multidisciplinary group with capabilities spanning machine learning, statistical modeling, exploratory data analysis, NLP, data visualization, graph and network modeling, ETL, data pipelines, data architecture, communication, project and product management, and strategy.
The group works with many kinds of data, including text, news feeds, financial reports, time series transactions, user behavior logs, imagery, and real-time streams.
The organization plans to hire both technical leads and individual contributors. Some hires will bring deep specialization, while others will be broader generalists. All team members are expected to have a strong grounding in statistics, mathematics, and/or computational algorithms, and they must be able to write code. Each person will contribute and take the lead according to their experience and strengths.
Working style and expectations
Because the team is being built from scratch, you would help shape both the team and its culture. That means being comfortable with uncertainty, taking initiative, and adapting as the group matures and grows.
The team is seeking people with distinctive backgrounds, varied skill sets, and fresh perspectives who can help accelerate the delivery of analytics, insights, and technology across the firm and to clients.
