Job overview
The custodian role is focused on keeping assigned spaces clean, sanitary, and safe. This position supports daily facility upkeep, follows established procedures, and helps maintain a professional and orderly work environment.
Key duties
- Carry out janitorial and general cleaning tasks across assigned areas.
- Complete the items assigned on the daily work schedule.
- Handle hazardous waste tasks, including collecting, sorting, classifying, storing, shipping, receiving, labeling, cleaning, recycling, and packaging special and hazardous waste materials.
- Use motorized cleaning equipment as needed.
- Maintain the day-to-day cleanliness and upkeep of the work area.
- Report accidents, unsafe situations, and hazardous conditions to a supervisor.
- Follow safety rules, site policies, and operating procedures.
- Intervene when unsafe actions are observed in yourself or others.
- Work collaboratively with teammates on assigned tasks.
- Repeat assigned tasks consistently and accurately.
- Keep the work area neat and organized at all times.
- Follow company protocols, procedures, rules, and direction from supervisors.
- Communicate professionally with leads, supervisors, co-workers, managers, and customers.
- Step in when staffing is short.
- Help the shift lead finish punch-list items.
- Use required personal protective equipment properly.
- Maintain a professional appearance and workplace conduct.
- Understand customer service expectations and the importance of customer satisfaction.
- Be familiar with reporting systems and environmental-related practices.
Qualifications and requirements
No specific formal education is required. A preferred background includes 3 to 6 months of training or related experience, or an equivalent mix of education and experience. The role may require a valid driver’s license, completion of safety and task training certifications, and in some cases forklift certification.
Additional strengths include bilingual ability, reading and interpreting instructions, procedures, manuals, and similar documents, along with strong spoken and written communication. Knowledge of cleaning methods, cleaning equipment care, and the safe and efficient use of cleaning compounds and chemicals is also important, and the individual should be willing to share that knowledge with the team.
Physical requirements
This position involves physical activity and may require sitting as well as talking or listening for portions of the shift. The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 35 pounds. Reasonable accommodation may be available for qualified individuals with disabilities.
Work schedule and pay
The shift runs Sunday through Thursday from 6:00 pm to 2:30 am. The hourly pay rate is $19.50.
