Stellenbeschreibung

Role overview

Edstaff is partnering with several secondary schools in and around Wigan to recruit energetic cover supervisors for temporary supply work, available on both full-time and part-time schedules.

This opportunity is well suited to people who want to build classroom experience before moving into education, as well as anyone keen to support and teach young people.

As a cover supervisor in a secondary school, you will oversee entire classes when regular teachers are absent for short periods. You will keep behaviour in line with each school’s policies, guide students through learning tasks across the curriculum, and deliver the prepared work left by the teacher. Lesson planning and marking are not part of the role, and the materials provided will not require subject-specialist expertise.

This position is ideal for graduates, career changers, and others considering a future in teaching.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and supervise classes across KS3 and KS4 when subject teachers are unavailable.
  • Present pre-prepared lesson content and keep pupils focused on the task.
  • Encourage positive conduct and manage behaviour appropriately.
  • Provide learning support to students during activities.
  • Record attendance accurately and escalate any concerns to the appropriate staff member.
  • Help with wider school responsibilities where needed.
  • Follow all school rules, routines, and safeguarding procedures.

Requirements

  • A degree or an equivalent qualification.
  • Previous experience working with young people aged 11 to 16.
  • Clear communication and strong people skills.
  • Confidence in front of a classroom.
  • Adaptability and a flexible approach to work.
  • Dependability, punctuality, and a professional attitude.
  • An enhanced DBS check, or willingness to secure one.

Benefits

  • Support from a dedicated consultant throughout the job search.
  • Weekly PAYE pay.
  • Access to free online CPD-accredited training.
  • Local placements matched to your preferences and location.
  • Potential to develop relationships with schools that may lead to long-term or permanent roles.
  • Competitive pay rates.
  • Referral bonus opportunity through the refer-a-friend scheme.

Additional information

The employer is committed to safeguarding children and young people and expects all staff to share that responsibility.
