Role overview

SMBC Group is hiring an Assistant Vice President for its HR Shared Services function in Singapore, with a focus on payroll operations. The role is centered on accurate, timely, and compliant end-to-end payroll delivery while supporting broader HR service excellence.

What you will handle

  • Run payroll from end to end with accuracy and timeliness, covering new joiners, overtime, claims, off-cycle payouts, and final settlement payments while staying aligned with internal policies, procedures, and payroll-related regulatory obligations such as CPF and income tax administration.
  • Oversee payroll governance, operating controls, and compliance requirements, including CPF, IRAS, and statutory reporting.
  • Work with external tax providers on tax exposure, tax equalization, and expatriate tax-related matters.
  • Manage cross-border payroll recharge processes, government-paid leave reimbursements, vendor invoices, general ledger preparation, headcount tracking, staff cost reporting, survey responses, and employee/audit queries.
  • Act as the main point of contact and payroll specialist between internal teams, external payroll vendors, and HR stakeholders to keep payroll services efficient, compliant, and aligned with HR and business goals.
  • Improve service quality by keeping payroll procedures current, tightening controls, and refining processes and workflows.
  • Support payroll improvement projects and take on additional duties as required.

Candidate profile

  • Degree or diploma in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field, along with 5 to 8 years of relevant payroll management experience.
  • Background in a fast-moving work environment; experience in large banking and financial services organizations or multinational companies, especially with expatriate payroll and tax, will be an advantage.
  • Strong Excel capability, including building and maintaining complex spreadsheets and using advanced formulas and functions for payroll analysis, reconciliation, and reporting.
  • Working knowledge of employment laws, statutory submissions, payroll compliance obligations, and SAP SuccessFactors.
  • Strong customer orientation, urgency, attention to detail, and solid organizational ability, with the capacity to manage multiple priorities and work well across all organizational levels.
  • Self-driven, flexible, and proactive, with a strong mindset for process improvement and good numerical and analytical skills.
  • Resilient, adaptable team player who is committed to continuous improvement and raising the standard of HR service delivery.
