Stellenbeschreibung
About the Company
Súilsiar is a fast-growing EdTech business focused on improving bilingual and underserved-language learning. The company already serves more than 5,000 paying subscribers through partner schools and is supported by assured multi-year government funding, giving it a stable and profitable base as it continues to scale.
The platform was first proven in Irish-medium secondary schools and is designed to support teaching and learning across multiple languages, curricula, and eventually other sectors beyond education. The team is also building new AI-powered tools for teachers and students, with an early proof of concept now needing to be developed into production-ready features for a planned Q2 2027 launch.
This role will place you in a highly collaborative environment alongside the founding team, external white-label platform developers, and AI specialists at CeADAR, Ireland’s National Centre for Applied AI. The company values trust, quality effort, and loyalty, and can offer flexibility around working hours alongside close teamwork.
Role Overview
This position is for Súilsiar’s first in-house developer. The work centers on three major priorities: integrating AI backend functionality, improving and localising the current platform, and building the technical foundations for future expansion into primary schools in 2027. Alongside this, you will handle day-to-day maintenance and regular stand-up reporting.
Key Responsibilities
You will spend most of your time in the Python/FastAPI backend, connecting AI services and refining the retrieval-augmented generation pipeline so responses are accurate and aligned with the curriculum. You will also work on prompt design, API orchestration, and backend integration for new AI supports.
On the product side, you will take ownership of the user interface for the existing teaching and learning platform. Using React templates already in place, you will connect backend logic, improve accessibility, ensure localisation is accurate, and help create a smooth experience for current users. There is also room to introduce new features into the localised platform.
In addition, you will prepare the technical architecture needed for the company’s planned entry into the primary school market, adapting the white-label platform setup where necessary.
About You
The company values practical building experience highly, while also welcoming strong academic achievement. Qualifications that combine technology and language, such as Trinity’s CSLL, are especially valued. Applications are open both to high-potential recent graduates and to experienced builders who are motivated by the Irish-language mission and the pace of a startup environment.
You should be a strong Python and AI backend developer who is comfortable connecting APIs and working with databases. Familiarity with React is useful, and a willingness to grow in that area is important. You should also be comfortable using UI templates to complete frontend tasks.
The ideal candidate is a practical problem-solver who can turn a proof of concept into a dependable product, work independently, explain technical ideas to non-technical people, and contribute original product thinking.
Interest in Irish, or working proficiency or fluency in Gaeilge, is a strong advantage because it can help with UX details and reviewing AI output, although linguistic quality control is also supported by the company’s NLP scrubbing tools.
Interview Process
The selection process is designed to help both sides assess fit. It will include at least two stages, with a possible additional stage depending on the process.
- Stage 1 is an in-person general conversation covering your background, goals, and experience, while also giving you a chance to learn about the company’s vision and culture.
- Stage 2 is a practical assessed project discussion focused on how you approach real-world building and problem-solving.
Terms and Role Details
The position is based in Carlow, County Carlow, Ireland, with a hybrid working arrangement that requires a minimum of two on-site days each week.
The contract is full-time and described as indefinite duration, or alternatively a minimum three-year fixed term, with a six-month probation period.
The salary is €40,000 per year, and the role includes 23 days of holiday.
Application Instructions
To apply, candidates should send a CV and a tailored cover letter explaining their fit for the role and why the mission of building AI for underserved-language education resonates with them. Applicants are also asked to include links to relevant projects or a GitHub profile.
Additional Information
The role is presented as a high-trust position with flexibility for someone who delivers strong quality and commitment. The company is looking for someone who can contribute to both the technical product and the broader mission of expanding accessible language education.
