Role Overview

The Afternoon Shift Supervisor will lead and coordinate plant operations during the afternoon shift, from 2:30 PM to 11:00 PM, Monday to Friday. This role involves supervising production, logistics, and maintenance activities while ensuring adherence to labor, safety, environmental, and corporate regulations. The position includes profit and loss accountability for meeting budget and production goals, and oversees a team consisting primarily of general laborers, equipment operators, and maintenance staff.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage, organize, and schedule the daily activities of plant personnel, including maintenance teams, to ensure safety and efficiency.
  • Optimize production output, cleanup, and maintenance processes during the afternoon shift.
  • Act as a proficient hands-on supervisor capable of performing maintenance tasks such as welding, lubrication, bearing replacement, conveyor repairs, and operating forklifts and other heavy equipment as needed.
  • Lead, mentor, and guide staff in maintenance repairs and contribute actively to maintenance efforts.
  • Generate and maintain internal documentation including bale counts, facility inspections, vehicle pre/post-trip reports, plant statistics, and audits.
  • Monitor material flow throughout the plant system and implement proactive measures to improve throughput.
  • Maintain accurate logs and calendars for plant and mobile equipment.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable laws and standards such as OHSA and Environmental Compliance Approval.
  • Safeguard the health and safety of all direct reports.
  • Closely monitor equipment reports to reduce downtime effectively.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Between 3 to 5 years of experience in a supervisory role within a plant setting.
  • Proven expertise in equipment maintenance and welding.
  • Strong interpersonal, team-building, and communication skills suitable for a multicultural workplace.
  • Comprehensive understanding of workplace safety responsibilities.
  • Competence in operating and training others on various mobile equipment.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Proficiency with MS Office applications.
  • Experience with recycling, material recovery, or material handling facilities considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of PLC programming and controls is a plus.
  • Valid driver’s license is mandatory.
  • Willingness to work the afternoon shift consistently.
  • Experience in operating forklifts or heavy machinery.

Work Environment

  • Operations occur within a plant environment exposed to variable weather conditions.
  • Exposure to dust, noise, temperature extremes, fumes, and general shop and waste processing environment.
  • Interaction with residential and commercial waste as well as recycling materials.
  • Working around equipment traffic is expected.
