Job description
About the Role
Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), a global IT and consulting leader with over 616,000 professionals worldwide, is seeking a dedicated VSAT L2 Engineer / Satellite Communication Specialist based in Doha, Qatar. This full-time position involves working remotely to support and enhance satellite communication systems integral to TCS’s technological services.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct in-depth troubleshooting and fault isolation for issues such as VSAT link failures, low SNR or high BER conditions, hub-to-remote communication disruptions, and network congestion affecting satellite link performance.
- Diagnose root causes including alignment discrepancies, radio frequency interference, hardware malfunctions involving modems, antennas, and RF components, as well as weather-induced impairments.
- Manage and resolve priority incidents (P1/P2) escalated from Level 1 support, ensuring service restoration within defined mean time to repair (MTTR) objectives.
- Collaborate with field technicians for antenna realignment, coordinate with Network Operations Center teams for configuration updates, and engage vendors or original equipment manufacturers to facilitate issue resolution.
- Analyze RF and satellite parameters such as link budgets, carrier performance metrics, uplink/downlink integrity, and troubleshoot environmental influences like rain fade and atmospheric effects as well as technical variables such as power imbalances and frequency interference.
- Perform thorough root cause analysis for persistent link failures and recurring VSAT downtime; recommend corrective actions and preventative measures following CAPA practices.
- Support change management activities including VSAT installation, system migration, hub upgrades, configuration adjustments, and conduct pre-implementation checks plus post-deployment validations assessing risks and impacts.
- Coordinate with OEMs (including Hughes, Gilat, iDirect), field service teams, and satellite service providers; manage technical assistance center and vendor escalations effectively.
- Monitor link stability, maximize throughput, maintain uptime, and address congestion and RF inefficiencies to optimize satellite network performance.
- Provide technical mentorship and guidance to Level 1 support personnel, review escalated issues to improve troubleshooting effectiveness, and enhance operational procedures and knowledge repositories.
- Prepare detailed reports encompassing root cause analyses, performance metrics, and incident reviews; actively participate in problem management and service improvement initiatives.
Required Skills and Knowledge
- Extensive expertise with VSAT systems including hub, remote terminals, and satellite links.
- Strong understanding of RF principles such as signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), bit error rate (BER), energy per bit to noise power spectral density ratio (Eb/N0), and power level management.
- Comprehensive knowledge of satellite communication theory and practical applications.
- Basic familiarity with IP networking fundamentals and routing concepts.
- Hands-on experience operating VSAT platforms from major vendors like Hughes, iDirect, and Gilat as well as using monitoring and diagnostic tools specific to satellite communications.
