Role overview
Port Macquarie Hastings Council is looking for an experienced and motivated Arborist / Tree Worker to join its Vegetation Operations team. This is a practical, field-based position focused on caring for the public tree network and supporting safe, healthy community spaces.
What you will do
- Partner with the Vegetation Operations team to complete scheduled and urgent tree maintenance work.
- Carry out pruning, deadwood removal, inspections, and tree removals in accordance with Australian Standards.
- Set up work sites, including hazard checks, traffic management, and exclusion zones.
- Perform operational duties such as chipping, mulching, planting, stump removal, and general site clean-up.
- Follow WHS requirements and apply safe work methods at all times.
- Use, operate, and look after arboricultural tools, plant, and equipment.
- Assist with planting initiatives and help strengthen team training and safe working practices.
What you need to succeed
- Certificate III in Horticulture (Arboriculture), or an equivalent qualification; alternatively, Certificate II with a commitment to complete Certificate III.
- A current MR driver licence.
- Proven experience in arboriculture, especially pruning and tree removals.
- A solid grasp of WHS obligations and the SafeWork NSW Code of Practice for the Amenity Tree Industry.
- The capability to assess tree hazards and complete inspections.
- Experience working in operational or team-based settings, with supervisory experience regarded as an advantage.
- Good communication skills and basic computer literacy.
Desirable background
- Experience using EWPs and boom-type equipment, along with a National Licence to Perform High Risk Work (WP).
- Hands-on experience with climbing, rigging, pruning, removals, chipping, stump grinding, planting, and mulching.
- Knowledge of AS4373 Pruning of Amenity Trees.
- Experience in programmed maintenance and reactive maintenance environments.
Employment terms and pay
This is a permanent full-time position working 38 hours per week on a 9-day fortnight arrangement. The salary is based on a 12% superannuation exclusion, with a starting rate of $1,326.45 per week and progression up to $1,484.70 per week depending on competency.
