Role Overview
We are currently seeking a Roster Clerk for our Colchester Depot on a 12-month fixed-term contract. This position involves creating and maintaining effective rosters aligned with operational needs and company standards, using current national rostering principles, competency requirements, and the agreed Terms and Conditions. The role supports safe, fair, and sustainable workforce deployment, ensuring consistent service delivery and regulatory compliance across all operations through proactive planning and ongoing collaboration and review.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and publish rosters using the corporate rostering tool in accordance with Maintenance Rostering Principles, adhering to company policies.
- Prepare weekly duty rosters covering sickness, leave, training, briefings, and special arrangements, coordinating with line managers to verify data.
- Handle short-notice roster changes, communicating with affected employees and managers and resolving related queries.
- Schedule appointments for medical examinations, interviews, safety critical competence expiry, and training courses.
- Monitor competency data to ensure roster shifts remain covered without expired competencies and coordinate with Competency Delivery Specialists to maintain records.
- Collect and analyse fatigue data, raising concerns with relevant line managers.
- Provide data and reporting support for route and delivery unit operations.
Compensation and Benefits
Salary Band: £29,917 (Band 5). This is a 12-month fixed-term contract based in Colchester with expectations to attend other sites across the route.

Required Experience and Skills
- Thorough understanding of national rostering principles
- Proven track record in prioritizing tasks and meeting deadlines
- Strong interpersonal and communication abilities
- Experience analyzing data and creating reports
- Familiarity with conditions of service relevant to rostering
- Knowledge of roster management systems and attention to detail in data handling
- Ability to collaborate effectively within teams including virtual members
- Solid general IT skills

- Geographical knowledge of the route
- Understanding of the UK rail industry
