Job description

Overview

Become part of His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service as an Operational Support Grade (OSG) at HMP Bullingdon. This multifaceted role involves assisting with the day-to-day functioning of a busy prison, engaging in a range of activities from security checks and managing deliveries to supervising visitors and monitoring surveillance systems.

Key Duties

  • Conduct security searches at the prison entrance.
  • Manage incoming and outgoing deliveries efficiently.
  • Supervise visitors to the prison premises.
  • Monitor telephone communications and CCTV footage to maintain security.
  • Combine administrative desk responsibilities with physically active tasks such as lifting, carrying, and escorting vehicles across the complex.

Additional Requirements

Applicants must possess a full and valid UK driving license that includes the D1 category, allowing them to operate vehicles with up to 16 passenger seats, no longer than 8 metres, and towing trailers up to 750kg. Although not mandatory, having personal transport is advantageous due to the prison’s rural location and limited public transit options. Shift start and finish times are fixed; punctuality in commuting is essential.

Candidate Profile

No formal qualifications are necessary; however, excellent communication skills, remaining calm under pressure, sound judgment, and a team-oriented mindset are crucial for success in this fast-moving environment. Interaction with prisoners is limited compared to prison officers but may occur occasionally depending on the establishment.

Work Patterns

The role requires working varied shifts, including weekends and nights, to ensure continuous operation of the facility.

Career and Benefits

This position offers valuable insight into prison operations and opportunities for career progression, including a potential conversion to a Prison Officer role through a dedicated scheme. Comprehensive training and development opportunities are provided.

Benefits include:

  • Starting with 25 days of annual leave, rising to 30 days after 10 years of service (pro-rata basis).
  • Nine bank, public, and privilege holidays annually.
  • Access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service.
  • Enrollment in the Civil Service pension scheme.
  • Additional perks such as season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and participation in a Cycle to Work scheme.
