Prepared Foods Team Member (Deli Service Counter & Culinary Venues)

Role overview

This role is part of the Prepared Foods team and supports day-to-day operations across the deli service counter and culinary areas. The position involves food preparation, customer-facing counter service, product stocking, sanitation, and keeping the department running smoothly. Team members are expected to deliver courteous, efficient service, follow store procedures, uphold health and safety standards, and contribute to the company’s overall goals and values.

Core duties

• Prepare, cut, and serve a range of hot and cold menu items such as meats, cheeses, sandwiches, burritos, wraps, salads, and pizza.
• Offer product samples to customers.
• Restock hot and cold display cases with items from the kitchen, prep areas, walk-ins, and refrigerators.
• Check product dating to maintain freshness and rotate stock when needed.
• Handle recycling by baling and consolidating materials.
• Support the Team Leader with setting up and presenting seasonal and high-volume merchandise.
• Complete spoilage, sampling, temperature, and sweep logs as required.
• Help with regular inventory counts.
• Arrive on time, maintain appropriate grooming and uniform standards, work scheduled shifts, and attend required training and meetings.
• Provide strong customer service, respond quickly and effectively to customer needs, and use suggestive selling when appropriate; answer phones and pages promptly and politely.
• Increase sales by following proper procedures for preparation, storage, rotation, stocking, and merchandising.
• Follow all established procedures, including weights and measures rules, sanitation standards, and safe work practices.
• Keep the work and shopping areas clean and sanitary, and maintain equipment according to safety and cleanliness expectations.
• Carry out opening, mid-shift, and closing tasks as assigned, and verify sign and price accuracy.
• Report safety risks and policy violations immediately.

Knowledge and capability expectations

The job calls for someone who can sell proactively, learn the basics of the department’s product range, pay close attention to detail, and communicate clearly with customers, vendors, and coworkers. Strong teamwork, good organization, solid time management, the ability to follow directions, comfort in a fast-paced setting, and genuine interest in natural foods are all important. The role also requires consistent alignment with quality standards and a strong work ethic.

Experience and work style

No prior retail background is needed. The schedule may include nights, weekends, and holidays, and the role requires flexibility.

Physical and working conditions

This position involves physically active work. You must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and spend 6 to 8 hours of an 8-hour shift standing or walking. The role also requires regular grasping, fine hand use, pushing, pulling, bending, twisting, squatting, and reaching. You may be exposed to FDA-approved cleaning chemicals, freezing temperatures below 32°F, refrigerator temperatures between 32°F and 40°F, and temperatures above 90°F. Work may take place in both wet and dry conditions. The job may involve knives, box cutters, electric pallet jacks, other heavy equipment, and ladders.

Compensation and benefits

The hourly pay range is $18.50 to $25.00, depending on experience.
