Internship Overview
Auckland Council is offering a 3-month Planning Internship designed to provide meaningful exposure to urban planning practices from November 23, 2026, to February 19, 2027. The internship compensates at a living wage rate of $29.90 per hour, serving as a solid entry point for individuals enthusiastic about shaping Auckland’s development and urban environment.
Internship Focus Areas
- Resource Consents: Engage directly with the practical application of the Unitary Plan and observe the Resource Management Act in a fast-paced setting, assisting with accurate, professional consenting advice.
- Policy Planning: Participate in policy development and analysis, spatial planning, place-making, and statutory planning to deliver quality planning outcomes.
- Heritage: Learn about Auckland’s historic heritage and its protection within the Unitary Plan, collaborating with a skilled team offering advice on heritage identification, management, and education.
- Healthy Waters & Flood Resilience - Resource Management: Support infrastructure and environmental projects by applying the Resource Management Act and Unitary Plan, partnering with experienced planners and engineers to promote sustainable waterways and flood resilience.
Applicant Profile
Ideal candidates will be enrolled in the second-to-last year of a relevant bachelor’s degree or pursuing a master’s degree. A New Zealand Restricted driver’s licence is preferred but not mandatory. Strong communication skills and the ability to work autonomously as well as collaboratively are essential. Fields of study encouraged include Urban Planning, Environmental Planning, and Archaeology. Applicants must be eligible to work full-time in New Zealand during the internship period.
