Overview
Join Tesla's Toronto Automation team as a Mechanical Design Engineer and contribute to pioneering machinery development that supports Tesla's cell manufacturing, energy, and vehicle production lines. This role is integral to advancing factory automation by transforming conceptual ideas into practical, world-class equipment. The environment is dynamic and demanding, driven by Tesla's mission to revolutionize manufacturing and energy.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop new manufacturing equipment from initial concept through mass production.
- Enhance equipment efficiency, manufacturing precision, stability, automation, and intelligent control.
- Create comprehensive 3D CAD models, detailed fabrication and assembly drawings with appropriate GD&T annotations, and develop mechanical bills of materials alongside safety and maintenance documentation.
- Conduct motion simulations and finite element analysis (FEA) for complex components, leveraging expertise in dynamics, force, stress analysis, and solid mechanics.
- Select and integrate commercial off-the-shelf components such as sensors, servos, pneumatic actuators, and more.
- Review designs for performance, simplicity, robustness, and ease of assembly and installation; provide constructive feedback.
- Support manufacturing, assembly, project management, and production teams by troubleshooting design issues and driving iterative improvements to optimize machinery performance.
Required Qualifications and Skills
- Over seven years of hands-on professional experience in mechanical design or manufacturing engineering, focusing on mechanical or electromechanical systems.
- Advanced proficiency in SolidWorks, Product Data Management (PDM) systems, AutoCAD, and similar CAD/CAE tools.
- Strong knowledge of drafting conventions and GD&T standards, such as ASME Y14.5.
- Extensive expertise in mechanical equipment, fixture, layout, and tooling design using both 2D and 3D CAD methodologies.
- Experience creating precise manufacturing drawings for various fabrication techniques, including CNC machining, manual machining, welding, sheet metal forming, and additive manufacturing, with familiarity in mechanical joining methods.
- Comprehensive understanding of automation equipment systems—robotics, vision systems, material handling, conveyors, PLCs—as well as solid mechanics, pneumatics, hydraulics, dynamics, material selection, prototyping, design of experiments (DoE), testing methods, and standard machining and fabrication processes.
- Hands-on experience with diverse test systems, industrial sensors, actuators, and equipment such as pogo-pins, pressure transducers, temperature controllers, and current meters.
- Proven track record of managing new equipment installations and leading product launch initiatives.
- Background in high-volume manufacturing environments or related engineering disciplines is highly beneficial.
- Interest and emerging experience in leveraging artificial intelligence tools for mechanical design and 3D modeling applications.
