About the Role
The Village of Palatine's Information Technology Department is looking for a detail-oriented and highly skilled IT Administrator to join their team in a full-time capacity, working 35 hours per week. This hands-on role involves monitoring, coordinating, and maintaining various network and system operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Set up, install, update, and upkeep network devices such as routers, switches, firewalls, and cabling systems including copper and fiber optics. Manage both Local Area Networks (LAN) and Wide Area Networks (WAN) effectively.
- Work collaboratively with IT staff and external contractors to share knowledge and ensure consistent support across all operational levels.
- Plan and manage workflows and time-sensitive projects to optimize departmental productivity. Provide expert advice on cross-department infrastructure projects.
- Implement and manage security layers including firewalls, antivirus programs, and VPNs to ensure secure remote connections and network reliability.
- Develop and execute disaster recovery plans, maintain backup systems, and perform necessary restores.
- Coordinate with external vendors and consultants to facilitate system improvements and project completion.
- Create and maintain detailed documentation such as network design blueprints, monthly reports, IT asset lists, and standard operating procedures.
- Perform configuration, preventive maintenance, and imaging on servers, computers, printers, and related hardware.
- Troubleshoot complex technical issues and provide advanced guidance and mentorship to junior IT personnel.
- Stay informed about emerging technologies and software trends for strategic planning and implementation.
- Participate in a scheduled weekly rotation providing 24/7 on-call support, including after-hours and weekend work for critical system maintenance and emergency technical assistance.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate holds a bachelor’s degree or a technical school equivalent with five years of progressive experience in advanced technical roles, though relevant experience in network administration and hardware/software support may substitute for formal education. Experience within the public sector is advantageous, and certifications in technical and project management areas are highly valued. A strong understanding of enterprise technologies including Active Directory, Azure, Microsoft 365, SQL databases, virtual environments, network protocols IPv4, wireless standards, and Windows operating systems is essential. Excellent problem-solving abilities and a valid driver's license are required due to the need to support multiple municipal locations.
Compensation and Benefits
This position is salaried, offering an initial salary between $104,000 and $130,000 annually based on qualifications, with a maximum limit of $139,595. Benefits include participation in the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF), comprehensive health insurance requiring a 10% employee contribution, paid time off, and other employee benefits.
Work Schedule
Normal working hours are Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The role also requires participation in a rotational 24/7 on-call schedule to provide after-hours support.
