About the Role
The Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services (DPSCS) in Maryland invites dedicated professionals to join as Internal Investigation Detective Sergeants. Positions are available across several locations in Maryland including Howard County (Savage), Allegany County (Cumberland), Washington County (Hagerstown), and Wicomico County (Salisbury), with the potential to fill future statewide permanent and contractual vacancies.
Primary Responsibilities
- Conduct confidential and administrative investigations concerning criminal activities and serious misconduct under supervision from the Intelligence & Investigative Division leadership.
- Interview complainants, victims, witnesses, and suspects utilizing approved interrogation techniques compliant with established procedures.
- Gather and preserve physical evidence relevant to investigations using standard collection methods.
- Prepare clear, unbiased, and detailed investigative reports for criminal and administrative cases.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent as recognized by the Maryland State Board of Education.
- Minimum of two years’ investigative experience as an Internal Investigation Detective Provisional or equivalent investigative law enforcement experience within municipal, county, state, or federal agencies.
- Must hold current or recent (within three years) Maryland Police & Correctional Training Commission Law Enforcement Certification.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience handling allegations of employee misconduct or investigating suspected criminal acts by staff.
- Proficiency in producing comprehensive criminal and administrative investigation reports.
Licenses and Certifications
- Active Maryland Police Officer certification is mandatory.
- A valid Maryland motor vehicle operator’s license is required for duties involving vehicle operation.
Additional Requirements
- Strong verbal and written communication skills in English are essential; multilingual ability, especially in Spanish, Mandarin, or Korean, is advantageous.
- Candidates must meet Maryland Police Training Commission standards, including U.S. citizenship or resident alien status, minimum age 21, comprehensive background checks, oral interview, physicals, polygraph, and psychological assessments.
- Medical examination to assess fitness to perform job functions, periodic firearms proficiency, and being subject to 24/7 call-in are conditions of employment.
- Compliance with substance abuse testing policies as per Maryland regulations.
Selection Process
