FIDIC Engineer

Role Overview

The FIDIC Engineer serves as the formally appointed "Engineer" under FIDIC Contract conditions, tasked with overseeing contract management while ensuring impartial and fair decisions regarding schedule, budget, and quality aspects. This role encompasses essential FIDIC duties, advanced contract oversight, commercial and claims advisory, risk management, dispute prevention, and technical supervision coordination.

Primary Responsibilities

• Execute FIDIC Contract Administration duties, including issuing instructions, decisions, and certifications aligned with contract authority.
• Guarantee compliance by all parties with time, cost, quality, and procedural obligations.
• Manage contractual processes such as notices, submissions, and approvals while maintaining a thorough audit trail.
• Evaluate and determine claims related to extensions of time, prolongations, and disruptions, ensuring validation and contractual compliance.
• Issue Engineer’s Determinations per FIDIC standards and actively handle potential claims to prevent dispute escalation.
• Administer contract variations, coordinate with commercial teams to review and confirm changes, and control cost exposures.
• Identify and manage risks pertaining to schedule, cost, and project delivery, implementing early mitigations and maintaining a risk register.
• Facilitate dispute avoidance through timely decisions, clear documentation, and procedural compliance, supporting formal dispute resolution when necessary.
• Lead all contractual communications, ensuring robustness, consistency, and traceability via electronic document management systems.
• Oversee programme and progress assessments, validating critical path, delay analyses, and recovery plans in line with contract milestones.
• Coordinate activities between site supervision and contract administration to translate site issues into formal actions.
• Supervise project close-out tasks including issuance of Taking-Over and Performance Certificates as well as Defects Liability Period processes like snagging and commissioning.

Contracts Manager Responsibilities

• Perform claims evaluation and develop associated strategies.
• Provide contract interpretation, advisory services, and draft legal notices and position papers.
• Identify commercial risks and assist in their mitigation.
• Support negotiation and dispute resolution efforts ensuring defensible contract positions throughout.

Experience and Professional Attributes

• Degree in Engineering, Architecture, or Construction Management.
• Minimum 15 years of experience in FIDIC contract administration and construction supervision.
• Proven background as a FIDIC Engineer and/or senior claims or contracts manager on large, complex projects such as hospitality, mixed-use, high-rise, and infrastructure developments.
• In-depth knowledge of FIDIC Conditions of Contract, particularly the Red Book.
• Expertise in claims analysis, extension of time assessment, and dispute mitigation.
• Strong commercial insight with the ability to evaluate cost impacts from contractual decisions.
• Ability to make independent, balanced, and legally defensible determinations.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills for contractual correspondence.
• Robust negotiation and stakeholder management capabilities.
• High professional integrity, objectivity, and sound judgment.
• Detail-focused with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Capable of operating effectively under pressure in complex, fast-paced project settings.
