About the Role
This leadership position is pivotal in shaping the technological foundation of Backpack Healthcare, a minority-owned, clinician-led online mental health platform serving children, teens, and young adults across multiple states. The company’s mission is to expand access to Medicaid-accepting mental health care through cutting-edge technology.
The Director of Technology will report directly to Executive Leadership, leading the engineering organization with a balance of hands-on technical expertise and strategic oversight. This role demands involvement in everything from code reviews to budget management, and ownership of technology strategy, security, compliance, AI integration, and IT operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Define and execute the technology vision, aligning architecture, strategic roadmaps, vendor relations, and budget planning with clinical and business goals.
- Lead engineering team activities, including recruiting, mentoring, fostering team culture, and maintaining technical engagement by reviewing pull requests and resolving blockers.
- Manage product delivery cycles: sprint planning, prioritizing initiatives, and ensuring impactful, timely releases.
- Oversee security measures and regulatory compliance frameworks, particularly HIPAA, including vulnerability management, incident response, and audit preparations.
- Administer IT operations comprising infrastructure oversight, SaaS tools management, endpoint security, and user support.
- Develop and implement AI strategies to enhance clinical programs and internal processes, ensuring governance aligned with data sensitivity requirements.
Candidate Profile
- Minimum eight years of experience in software engineering with at least three years in leadership roles such as Director of Technology, CTO, Engineering Manager, or equivalent.
- Expertise in fast-paced SaaS environments, preferably within healthcare technology or digital health sectors.
- Proven ability to lead cross-functional projects involving technology and business stakeholders.
- Comprehensive knowledge of modern web frameworks, API and system integrations, cloud services (AWS, Azure, GCP), both relational and NoSQL databases, continuous integration/delivery pipelines, cloud-native architectures, and AI/large language models.
- Strong technical skills with active involvement in writing and reviewing production-quality code.
- Exceptional communication skills to effectively interact with both technical teams and executive leadership.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with HIPAA, HITRUST, SOC 2 compliance standards.
- Background in telehealth or behavioral health platforms.
- Experience in startup or hyper-growth company environments.
- Track record of leadership across both Product and Engineering domains.
- Experience deploying AI-driven solutions in production settings beyond experimental phases.
