Data Scientist - Supply Chain Analytics

About the Role

Best Buy is looking for a Data Scientist to join its Supply Chain Analytical Solutions team in Minneapolis. In this role, you will help solve complex supply chain problems that shape how goods move from distribution centers to customers. You will work closely with business, technology, data engineering, and analytics partners to turn supply chain opportunities into insights, predictive models, and decision-support tools that create measurable business impact.

The ideal candidate brings practical experience using data science and operations research to address real business challenges, along with the ability to navigate ambiguity, explain results clearly, and collaborate with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Work Arrangement

This position follows a hybrid schedule. You will be expected to work some days at the Best Buy location listed for the role and some days remotely from home or another non-Best Buy location. Exact arrangements depend on the team and role, and the recruiter or hiring manager will share more details during the hiring process.

Key Responsibilities

You will use advanced analytical techniques to improve supply chain performance, support operational decisions, and help teams act on data-backed recommendations.

• Use statistical modeling, machine learning, forecasting, simulation, optimization, and operations research methods to address supply chain challenges.
• Collect, prepare, transform, interpret, and analyze large structured and unstructured datasets to uncover insights that improve decision-making.
• Look for opportunities to improve internal processes, strengthen analytical outputs, and support enterprise KPI improvement.
• Work closely with decision scientists, data scientists, and cross-functional teams to deliver accurate and timely project outcomes.
• Build a strong understanding of Best Buy’s supply chain operations and identify where analytics can drive better results.
• Create clear presentations that explain findings, model outputs, business impact, and recommendations to business leaders and technical teams.
• Stay current with emerging analytics approaches and technologies and apply them to expand supply chain capabilities.

Basic Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in mathematics, statistics, economics, computer science, operations research, industrial engineering, or another quantitative discipline.
• Practical knowledge of analytical and statistical methods such as data analysis, statistics, operations research, and/or machine learning applied to business problems.
• At least 2 years of relevant experience in data science or a quantitative field, including 1+ year of applied or industry experience, or an equivalent mix of education and experience.
• At least 2 years of hands-on experience with analytics tools such as SQL, Python, or R, plus machine learning and/or optimization tools such as Python, R, Gurobi, or Vertex AI.
• At least 1 year of hands-on experience working with large structured and unstructured data environments.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s degree or PhD in a quantitative area such as operations research, industrial engineering, statistics, applied mathematics, computer science, or a similar discipline.
• 1+ year of retail industry experience, especially in order lifecycle, final-mile fulfillment, logistics, or warehouse operations.
• Experience applying multiple analytical or modeling approaches, including optimization, machine learning, artificial intelligence, statistical modeling, simulation, or other operations research techniques to real-world business problems.
• Experience collaborating with globally distributed teams.
