Counsellor - Interpersonal Violence Specialist

Overview

The University of Waikato is seeking a well-qualified Counsellor specializing in Interpersonal Violence to join its Student Health Service team based in Hamilton, New Zealand. This full-time role offers the chance to support student safety and wellbeing through trauma-informed counseling focused on sexual harm, family and relationship violence, harassment, coercion, and other abuse forms. The position combines direct client support, staff training, policy input, and collaboration with community agencies to promote a safer campus environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Deliver trauma-informed counseling, crisis response, risk assessment, and safety planning specifically for students impacted by interpersonal violence.
• Serve as a consultation resource to both clinical and non-clinical staff for handling disclosures and incidents involving interpersonal violence.
• Assist staff in navigating risk evaluations, safety issues, referral procedures, and trauma-sensitive approaches.
• Conduct trainings, workshops, and capability-building sessions to enhance staff confidence and organizational response to violence.
• Partner with the Violence Prevention Health Promoter to inform prevention campaigns and educational programs designed to raise awareness.
• Provide expert clinical guidance to ensure prevention efforts are safe, evidence-based, and tailored to student needs.
• Contribute to the creation and refinement of policies, procedures, and service improvements addressing interpersonal violence.
• Develop and maintain partnerships with specialist community agencies to coordinate student care pathways.
• Collaborate effectively within an interdisciplinary Student Health Service team committed to student wellbeing and success.

Candidate Profile

Applicants must be fully registered mental health professionals such as counsellors, social workers, or psychologists possessing: strong skills in assessment, intervention, and case management; experience supporting mental health needs with brief, recovery-oriented interventions; and ability to connect clients to appropriate services. A solid understanding of the New Zealand mental health landscape, including community services and referral mechanisms, is essential. Candidates must commit to culturally responsive care to diverse groups including Māori, Pacific, Rainbow, and other communities, delivering inclusive and compassionate support.

The role demands clear communication, strong relationship-building, independent and teamwork skills, adaptability under pressure, and dedication to ongoing learning and professional integrity.

• This is a full-time position of 37.5 hours per week located at the Hillcrest Campus.
