Role Overview
The Assistant Production Manager will support daily leadership and operational performance within the cabinet manufacturing facility. Reporting to the Production Manager, this hands-on managerial role involves ensuring safe, consistent, and effective production while enhancing team performance and fostering operational accountability. This position requires understanding the unique requirements of custom cabinet projects, encompassing planning, production, and finishing processes.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in managing production workflows, labor planning, material handling, and resource allocation within a custom cabinet manufacturing environment.
- Ensure smooth production operations by clarifying priorities, addressing issues promptly, and promoting consistent execution across teams.
- Convey and model operational goals and directions from the Production Manager, ensuring they are understood and implemented by all production personnel.
- Serve as a technical and operational support resource, troubleshooting challenges and aiding decision-making on the production floor.
- Lead, coach, and support production staff focusing on accountability, safe work practices, quality assurance, training, goal development, and team growth.
- Collaborate with supervisors and management on personnel performance matters, including attendance, conduct, conflict resolution, and consistent application of expectations.
- Promote a production culture centered on teamwork, safety, accountability, efficiency, and ongoing improvement.
- Monitor production workflow, capacity, quality, and output to identify improvement opportunities and reduce waste.
- Utilize data, tracking systems, floor observations, and documentation for continuous improvement and operational accountability.
- Maintain accurate production records and assist with reporting on performance metrics, quality control, labor, delivery, and operational outcomes.
- Lead production meetings and engage in cross-departmental leadership discussions to support communication, planning, and alignment.
- Coordinate effectively with maintenance, receiving, shipping, quality control, and management teams to ensure seamless operational execution.
Qualifications and Experience
- A minimum of seven years’ progressive experience in wood-based manufacturing, including three to five years in management, assistant management, or senior production leadership roles.
- Experience specifically in home construction, flooring, doors, windows, or secondary wood manufacturing industries is required.
- Custom manufacturing exposure is an advantage.
- Demonstrated expertise in trade-based production and wood-based cabinet manufacturing or architectural product environments.
- Strong knowledge of production workflows, quality standards, labor and material planning, equipment usage, and scheduling.
- Proven ability to manage and coach production teams across multiple shifts, including handling accountability and performance management.
- Skilled in managing shifting production priorities and resolving operational challenges within custom cabinet manufacturing.
- Experience with Lean manufacturing principles, Six Sigma, and continuous improvement efforts.
- Familiarity with MRP and ERP systems is essential; knowledge of AutoCAD, CAD/CAM, CNC programming is beneficial.
- Competent in Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.
- Excellent communication, organizational, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
- Capable of managing processes, analyzing results to support operations decisions, and enforcing accountability fairly.
Work Environment and Schedule
- This position is based onsite, splitting time between office tasks and active production floor involvement.
- Flexibility to support operations during varying shifts and outside regular hours as required is necessary.
Compensation and Benefits
- Annual compensation ranges from $80,000 to $120,000, dependent on skills and experience.
