Job description

Position Summary

This role is responsible for developing and maintaining an accounting system that complies with GASB standards. Key duties include managing accounting records, documenting financial transactions, and overseeing departmental budgets.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee Accounting Assistant and Senior Accounting Assistant staff.
  • Input journal entries into accounting software accurately.
  • Analyze and interpret accounting data and reports professionally.
  • Maintain the accounting database including ledger accounts and user management.
  • Ensure proper documentation of all financial transactions to maintain fiscal integrity.
  • Reconcile bank and balance sheet accounts, identify and correct errors.
  • Apply accounting principles to develop and maintain systems for tracking financial activity.
  • Prepare and distribute various internal and external financial reports.
  • Collaborate with departments to resolve complex accounting issues.
  • Disseminate budget instructions, clarify policies, and develop budget forms and reports.
  • Evaluate budget requests for completeness and accuracy; summarize departmental budgets.
  • Create budget forecasts considering departmental needs, expenditures, and economic conditions.
  • Review and verify payroll files before uploading into accounting software.
  • Supervise procurement to ensure policy compliance.
  • Support other departments on financial transactions or reporting tasks.
  • Maintain detailed fixed asset records including infrastructure acquisitions and retirements.
  • Perform additional assigned duties as needed.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Strong ability to analyze and interpret complex financial reports.
  • Advanced computer skills including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Experience with accounting and department-specific software.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.
  • Competent in researching and utilizing electronic technology.
  • Proficient in record-keeping, report generation, filing, and records management.
  • Business math skills including working knowledge of percentages and decimals.
  • Good judgment, discretion, and problem-solving abilities in fast-paced environments.
  • Capability to compile and summarize diverse informational data and statistics.
  • Interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Discretion in handling sensitive information such as employee salaries and project details.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

Work is primarily office-based, involving sedentary tasks with occasional walking or standing. Employees must be able to operate computers, calculators, and telephones, and occasionally lift or move items weighing between 5 and 15 pounds.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting required.
  • Minimum of five years of related experience with at least one year in governmental accounting.
  • Ability to obtain a valid South Carolina driver's license.
