Role Overview
We are seeking a Software Engineer to join the Fundamental Equity COO team at Schonfeld, working closely with quant researchers and COO leadership within the business rather than a central technology division. The role focuses on creating backend services, data pipelines, and internal APIs that enhance team productivity, advance AI adoption, and better utilize available data.
AI integration is central to this position, playing a significant role rather than being secondary. The candidate will be instrumental in developing how large language models (LLMs), autonomous workflows, and AI-driven tools are incorporated into the investment processes.
The position requires a proactive professional who anticipates business needs, owns deliverables, and delivers pragmatic, quality solutions that directly benefit investment teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Write clean, well-organized, and maintainable code, fostering sound engineering practices within the team including CI/CD and version control, and actively contributing to company-wide best practices.
- Create, deploy, and maintain internal APIs using FastAPI and backend services that deliver portfolio analytics, market data, and quantitative results to investment professionals, hosted on AWS.
- Manage and expand scheduled data pipelines and orchestration workflows using Prefect within Docker and Kubernetes containerized environments, ensuring platform reliability and observability.
- Collaborate closely with central Technology teams to develop and operate AI capabilities customized for the Fundamental Equity business, involving LLM APIs, MCP servers, and agentic workflows across a multi-model setup in a rapidly evolving environment.
- Develop and maintain a shared AI plugin and skills repository accessible to all Fundamental Equity investment staff, ensuring clear documentation, reusability, and vendor neutral design.
- Design and manage structured PostgreSQL databases for research, portfolio, and operations, aiming to make data more actionable and AI-friendly.
Required Qualifications
- 2 to 5 years of experience in quantitative development, development strategies, analytics engineering, or quantitative analysis within financial firms such as banks, hedge funds, asset managers, or financial data providers.
- Strong Python expertise focused on writing well-structured, object-oriented code and solid skills in SQL and PostgreSQL database design.
- Proven experience building, deploying, and maintaining backend services and APIs (preferably FastAPI) in production systems.
- Hands-on experience with AI/LLM integrations across multiple model providers, including API usage, prompt engineering, tool incorporation, and retrieval-augmented workflows.
- Familiarity with MCP servers, agentic frameworks, or architectures handling multi-model orchestration, either through custom solutions or equivalents.
- Experience using AI-assisted development tools such as Claude Code or Cursor integrated into daily engineering workflows.
- Comfortable working in AWS environments, including EC2, container orchestration, and infrastructure automation using tools like Terraform.
- Knowledge of Docker, Kubernetes, and workflow orchestrators like Prefect or Airflow.
- Strong fundamentals in software engineering: version control, organized codebases, CI/CD pipelines, thorough documentation, and testing processes.
- Active engagement in the evolving AI development ecosystem by experimenting with new frameworks and tools to make informed decisions on project direction.
- Collaborative mindset, comfortable communicating with both technical and investment stakeholders within an open and supportive team environment.
- Product-oriented approach focusing on solving user problems and delivering value beyond just code execution.
- Thrives in a fast-paced, business-focused environment with shifting requirements rather than a pure research setting.
- Self-driven with ownership mindset handling projects from conception through to iteration and maintenance.
- Curious and interested in financial markets and investment methodologies.
Preferred Skills
- Experience in designing dashboards or simple user interfaces using frameworks like Streamlit or React for internal users.
- Exposure to integrating alternative data sources or vendor APIs.
- Previous work experience at hedge funds or multi-manager investment platforms.
