Senior Development Engineer

Role Overview

Napier City Council is searching for a seasoned Senior Development Engineer with a solid technical background and a comprehensive understanding of the local government sector. This role involves guiding complex development submissions, providing engineering leadership, and promoting top-tier engineering standards that will influence the city's future growth.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead evaluations of multifaceted, high-value development proposals critical to shaping Napier's urban landscape.
• Offer senior technical guidance, mentorship to the Development Engineering team, and oversee quality assurance processes.
• Influence and improve engineering policies, standards, and development practices aligned with sustainable urban expansion.
• Collaborate effectively with developers, consultants, Water Services, and other Council departments to deploy practical and quality infrastructure solutions.
• Assist in transitioning water-related development engineering duties, contributing to shaping innovative workflows and practices in Council.
• Contribute to a cooperative team environment where expertise and professional judgment deliver enduring community benefits.

Candidate Profile

• Significant experience in Development Engineering or equivalent senior roles with proven expertise in assessing complex land development and infrastructure projects.
• In-depth knowledge of subdivision layouts, servicing requirements, engineering approvals, and infrastructure compliance standards.
• Experience within or in partnership with local government bodies, possessing insights into their legislative and regulatory frameworks.
• Capacity to provide technical leadership, mentor junior engineers, and make prudent engineering decisions on complex matters.
• Ability to foster trusted relationships with developers, consultants, and internal stakeholders through practical advice, sound judgment, and transparent communication.
• Dedicated to excellence in engineering infrastructure delivery and committed to continuous improvement of practices and peer development.

This is a permanent, full-time position involving 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, based in Napier. The salary range for this role is $115,239 to $124,440 annually inclusive of KiwiSaver contributions, with the exact offer varying according to experience and qualifications.
