Senior Applied Scientist - AWS Security

Role Overview

We are seeking a Senior Applied Scientist passionate about generative AI, machine learning, and cybersecurity to develop advanced AI/ML solutions that safeguard our cloud infrastructure against sophisticated security threats. In this position, you will analyze vast datasets using GenAI and other AI/ML methodologies to design and implement services that detect and automate responses to cybersecurity threats across Amazon's infrastructure, especially targeting advanced persistent threats.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and deploy scalable AI/ML systems handling petabyte-scale security logs with real-time inference capabilities.
• Perform in-depth data analyses and build prototypes to uncover previously unidentified security vulnerabilities.
• Autonomously structure and address ambiguous problems by formulating and executing a research agenda with minimal supervision.
• Identify, develop, and advocate for innovative technologies to resolve complex scientific security challenges.
• Build consensus on scientific methodologies, balancing rigorous analysis with urgent operational requirements in security contexts.
• Mentor and guide teammates technically and professionally to foster growth.
• Contribute to patents, publish peer-reviewed papers, and present research internally and externally.

About The Team

This role is part of Amazon Active Defense, a division focused on scalable automation in AWS Security. The team unites security engineers, applied scientists, and software developers to create analytics capable of automatically detecting and mitigating threats within AWS resources in near real-time, especially targeting advanced threat actor behaviors internally.

Basic Qualifications

• PhD or Master's degree with 6+ years of applied research experience.
• Demonstrated experience mentoring or leading engineering teams.
• Over 3 years of professional experience developing machine learning models for business use cases.
• Proven track record deploying AI/ML models in production environments influencing real customer outcomes.
• Practical programming/scripting skills (e.g., Python) to solve real-world challenges.
• Must be a national of an EU Member state.

Preferred Qualifications

• Expertise applying AI/ML approaches to cybersecurity, fraud detection, or related fields.
• Experience developing and deploying generative AI applications.
• Familiarity with large-scale distributed systems such as Hadoop and Spark.
• Hands-on knowledge of AWS cloud services (SageMaker, Bedrock, EMR, Glue, Lambda, S3, etc.).
