About the Role

The Safety Engineer - Motor position in the EPS Mobility business unit entails fostering a zero-harm culture and ensuring adherence to legal and customer standards within a sophisticated automotive-grade production setting. Key duties involve developing and managing comprehensive environmental health and safety (EHS) systems, conducting risk assessments, implementing machine safety enhancements, lockout-tagout (LOTO) procedures, permit-to-work systems, contractor oversight, emergency response readiness, and training programs. The role collaborates extensively with Operations, Maintenance, Quality, and Engineering departments to minimize incidents and enhance performance metrics such as Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR) and Lost Time Injury Rate (LTIR), alongside near-miss reporting and audit compliance.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Develop, manage, and align site-wide EHS strategies, policies, and targets with corporate frameworks and legal regulations.
  • Implement routine operational safety meetings including daily huddles, Tier boards for Safety, Quality, Delivery, Cost, and People (SQDCP), monthly EHS progress reviews, and leadership Gemba walks to promote safety culture.
  • Promote proactive safety reporting for near-miss events and hazards while recognizing safe workplace behaviors.
  • Lead hazard identification and risk assessments such as HIRA and Job Safety Analysis (JSA) across various manufacturing stations including winding, forming, laser welding, curing, assembly, testing, and others.
  • Ensure comprehensive machine safety measures, including guarding, interlocks, light curtains, emergency stops, and safety PLC validations.
  • Implement and audit lockout-tagout protocols across electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and thermal energies.
  • Manage magnetic safety related to pinch points and strong fields, as well as safeguards for rotating equipment and hot-work permits.
  • Define and enforce safety protocols for high voltage and electrical areas including test zones, utilizing appropriate zoning, authorizations, PPE, and equipment calibrations.
  • Conduct ergonomic assessments for repetitive and manual handling tasks, introducing improvements and assistive devices.
  • Manage contractor safety processes from prequalification through to onsite safety management including inductions and daily toolbox talks.
  • Supervise safety during capital expenditure projects, including installation and commissioning of robotic and automation systems with adherence to construction and factory acceptance test safety standards.
  • Ensure consistent compliance with all applicable internal and external EHS regulations, licenses, and permits related to hazardous substances, waste, and fire safety.
  • Lead internal and external safety audits and inspections, managing closure of identified issues with sustainable corrective actions.
  • Maintain thorough documentation of all EHS policies, procedures, permits, chemical registers, training, incident records, and emergency drills.
  • Oversee incident investigations applying techniques like 5-Why, Fishbone, and TapRooT to implement corrective and preventive measures.
  • Track and work to continuously reduce incident rates, near-miss report times, and environmental non-compliances.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives such as Kaizen events incorporating safety enhancements and integration of EHS considerations into design and change management processes.

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical, Electronics, or Computer Science Engineering.
  • Minimum of five years’ hands-on experience with machine safety, high voltage and electrical safety, chemical and resin handling safety in automated production environments.
  • Expertise in conducting risk assessments (HIRA/JSA), lockout-tagout procedures, permit-to-work processes, incident investigations, contractor safety management, and emergency response planning.
  • Proven success in driving measurable improvements in safety performance indicators such as TRIR and LTIR, audit outcomes, and regulatory compliance.
  • Strong communication skills, adept at managing stakeholders and making informed decisions in ambiguous contexts.
