Position overview
This role supports Sherwin-Williams’ research and development work by helping create new products, improve existing formulas, and keep products aligned with customer expectations and internal quality standards. It also contributes to lab testing, cost-optimization efforts, handling product-related customer issues, and providing technical support to production and quality teams so products perform consistently and are delivered on time.
Key responsibilities
- Carry out laboratory analyses and tests, and help develop new or revised formulas that require an intermediate knowledge of chemistry, product ranges, and raw materials.
- Support the definition of quality standards and assist in fine-tuning product formulations and coding.
- Prepare test batches, apply basic product application knowledge, and help scale formulations from trial work to production.
- Evaluate, compare, and select materials for testing and manufacturing batches.
- Contribute as part of a project team on complex assignments that sit within larger initiatives, offering support to product development, quality control, manufacturing, and other operational functions.
- Follow department procedures, internal policies, and all relevant legal and regulatory requirements to maintain compliance.
- Prepare reports and documentation that summarize testing outcomes, project progress, and overall results.
- Address technical questions and concerns from plants, research staff, quality teams, customers, and other internal or external stakeholders.
- Run, clean, and calibrate laboratory equipment, using professional judgment when handling specialized or standard tools.
- Support project planning by contributing input on budgets, resources, timelines, and other project needs when required.
- May act as a lead or supervisor for lower-level technicians or support staff involved in research work.
- Take on other duties as assigned.

Work environment and physical demands
- The job may involve exposure to moving machinery, electrical currents, vibration, fumes, odors, dust, gases, chemicals, oils, and other common laboratory conditions.
- Typical physical tasks include reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, typing, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repeating movements.
- This is a medium-work role that may require handling up to 20 kg occasionally, up to 9 kg frequently, and up to 4.5 kg continuously.
Experience and education
The role calls for 5–7 years of industrial chemistry experience, with paint or coatings industry exposure preferred. A bachelor’s degree in chemistry or a closely related equivalent is preferred; however, equivalent technical experience may be accepted in place of a degree for this level.
