Job description
About the Role
The Operational Support Grade (OSG) at His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS) in HMP Bullingdon plays a vital role in assisting the daily operations of a busy prison facility. This engaging role involves a blend of administrative duties and physically active tasks such as security checks at the entrance, managing incoming deliveries, supervising visitors, and monitoring both phone communications and CCTV footage. Active movement across the prison premises is expected, including escorting vehicles.
Responsibilities
- Carry out security searches and gate checks.
- Oversee and manage deliveries entering the prison grounds.
- Supervise visitors and monitor telephone and CCTV systems.
- Perform physical tasks such as lifting, carrying, and moving vehicles within prison grounds.
- Work varied shifts including weekends and night times to maintain smooth operations.
Candidate Profile
No formal qualifications are required, but successful candidates will demonstrate excellent communication skills and the ability to remain calm under pressure. Good judgment, common sense, and strong teamwork are essential attributes for thriving in this fast-paced environment.
Additional Important Requirements
- Applicants must hold a valid full UK driving licence with D1 category entitlement, permitting them to drive vehicles with up to 16 passenger seats, maximum 8 meters in length, and trailers up to 750kg.
- Due to the rural location and limited public transportation options, having personal transport is advantageous, although not mandatory unless otherwise specified.
- Shift start and end times are fixed; punctuality and reliable transportation are the applicant’s responsibilities.
Opportunities and Benefits
- Access to comprehensive training and career development pathways, including the possibility to advance to prison officer roles via conversion schemes.
- Base salary of £30,491 per annum.
- Annual leave entitlement starts at 25 days, increasing to 30 days after 10 years of service (pro-rated).
- 9 bank, public, and privilege holidays annually.
- Access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service.
- Benefits including participation in the Civil Service pension scheme, season ticket loans, retail discounts, Employee Assistance Programme, and Cycle to Work scheme.
