Job description
Role Overview
Join HMP Bullingdon as an Operational Support Grade where you will contribute significantly to the smooth and secure running of an active prison environment. This position combines office-based responsibilities with physical activities such as lifting, carrying, and patrolling. Tasks include managing security procedures at the entrance, supervising visitors, handling deliveries, monitoring phone communications, and operating CCTV systems.
Candidate Requirements
Applicants must hold a full and valid UK driving licence that includes category D1, permitting you to operate vehicles with up to 16 passenger seats, a maximum length of 8 meters, and trailers up to 750kg. While owning a personal vehicle and driving is advantageous due to the prison's rural location and limited public transit, it is not strictly mandatory. You must be able to reliably arrive on time for fixed shift start and end times.
No formal qualifications are required; however, effective communication skills, the ability to remain calm under pressure, sound judgment, common sense, and a cooperative mindset are essential. The role demands flexibility to work shifts, including nights and weekends.
Career and Impact
This unique position offers the opportunity to protect the public and make a meaningful difference by supporting crucial daily operations within the prison. Though direct prisoner interaction is limited compared to prison officers, occasional contact may occur depending on the facility. The experience gained can serve as a stepping stone for further career progression within the prison service, including eligibility for the OSG to Prison Officer conversion pathway.
Compensation and Benefits
The starting salary is £30,491 per year. Beyond base pay, benefits include 25 days of annual leave increasing to 30 days after ten years of service (pro-rated), 9 days of bank, public and privilege holidays, access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service, Civil Service pension scheme membership, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and participation in a Cycle to Work scheme.
