Gladstone Ports Corporation (GPC) is a multi-commodity ports organisation with a long-standing presence and strong ties to the local community. Working across several port precincts, it supports regional development and Queensland’s wider economic future.

The Parks and Recreation team is responsible for more than 65 hectares of parklands and green areas, including the award-winning East Shores precinct, Gladstone Marina, and Spinnaker Park. These spaces help create an attractive, high-quality recreational setting for residents and visitors.

About the role

As a Parklands Gardener, you will help keep GPC’s outdoor spaces looking their best while also supporting safety, accessibility, and day-to-day usability for the public. This is a practical, hands-on position that blends gardening, landscaping, irrigation work, routine maintenance, and interaction with park users.

Key duties

• Care for and improve parklands, gardens, and associated facilities across locations such as East Shores and Gladstone Marina.
• Carry out horticultural tasks including planting, pruning, mulching, fertilising, and maintaining garden beds.
• Monitor plant health and manage weeds, pests, and related issues.
• Set up, service, and diagnose problems in irrigation systems.
• Use and look after equipment such as ride-on mowers and power tools.
• Complete general cleaning in public outdoor areas, including paths, boardwalks, BBQ areas, and other shared spaces.
• Organise and prioritise maintenance work on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis.
• Assist with landscaping and upgrade projects, including preparation of sites and planting work.
• Perform routine inspections and checks, including those for water park facilities.
• Document maintenance tasks and work with electronic maintenance systems.
• Help improve horticultural methods and presentation standards over time.
• Represent GPC professionally when dealing with visitors, contractors, and the broader community.

What you will bring

You should have practical experience in horticulture, landscaping, or park upkeep, along with a solid understanding of plant care and ongoing maintenance. Experience with irrigation systems is important, as is the ability to operate tools, machinery, and equipment safely.

The role suits someone who takes a proactive approach to safety, quality, and continuous improvement. You will also need strong judgement, the ability to manage competing priorities across multiple sites, and the confidence to communicate well with both colleagues and members of the public.

Mandatory qualifications and requirements

• Certificate III in Horticulture or an equivalent level of relevant experience.
• Minimum of a provisional driver’s licence.
• Capacity to obtain and keep a Maritime Security Identification Card (MSIC).
