About the Department

Role Overview

The Strategic Technology Division develops and coordinates emergency technology applications, strategic IT infrastructure, and enterprise platforms. The team is looking for an IT Security Specialist to help shape security policy, safeguard systems and data, and support secure technology operations across the agency.

Key Duties

  • Develop, maintain, and update security policies, standards, configurations, operating procedures, and guidelines covering identity, access, and information protection.
  • Track industry changes, coordinate with vendors, and help ensure alignment with citywide and agency security standards.
  • Review security posture, identify risks such as exposure, compromise, defects, or design weaknesses, and escalate serious concerns to leadership.
  • Advise agency executives on IT security policy and recommend improvements to existing standards and controls.
  • Support the design, implementation, and maintenance of Cisco-based WAN, LAN, and wireless environments.
  • Assist application, network, server, database, and storage teams with security input for new technologies, services, and system needs.
  • Provide security guidance for new products and internally built solutions.
  • Manage and support remote access tools such as VPN and Terminal Services.
  • Work with newer technologies including SD-WAN, Cisco ACI, and data center infrastructure products.
  • Lead advanced ACI setups involving inter-VRF routing through firewalls and service transitions.

Minimum Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college plus 4 years of full-time experience related to the projects and policy work required for the position, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Experience and Technical Profile

  • Hands-on ACI experience is required.
  • Background with SD-WAN, network switching, capacity planning, VLANs, routing protocols, WAN technologies, and network firewalls.
  • Experience with Cisco wireless deployments, Cisco data center systems, and load balancing.
  • About 5 years of relevant experience, including 2 years in an engineering role.
  • Experience performing physical equipment installations.
  • Cisco certification is preferred but not mandatory.
  • Knowledge of CCNP-level concepts, MPLS, EIGRP, OSPF, BGP, and QoS.
  • Understanding of data center networking, including Nexus and ACI.
  • Ability to juggle priorities, work independently or in a team, stay detail-oriented, and meet deadlines.
  • Comfort using standard office PCs, MS Office, and other business software or systems.
