Health and Safety Officer

Role overview

REAL Garments Ltd is hiring a full-time Health & Safety Officer for its manufacturing facility in La Tour Koenig, Port Louis, Mauritius. The position focuses on maintaining safe working conditions across production areas and dormitories, while also supporting environmental compliance and awareness initiatives.

Key responsibilities

• Oversee health and safety matters across production sites and staff dormitories.
• Conduct routine safety and health audits across departments to spot potential hazards.
• Carry out risk assessments and site inspections, and maintain proper records of findings.
• Advise management on practical controls and methods to reduce risk in business operations.
• Plan and deliver training sessions, including induction safety training, in line with OSHA requirements and social compliance expectations, with complete documentation.
• Recommend suitable occupational safety and health programmes when needed.
• Build clear communication channels on safety and health between management and employees.
• Inspect all workplaces at least once a month and log observations and outcomes.
• Investigate employee safety and health complaints, occupational incidents, and dangerous occurrences, then prepare reports and written recommendations.
• Track relevant legislation and award provisions related to workplace safety and health.
• Review and update safety manuals, procedures, and work rules as needed.
• Promote safe working habits through materials such as posters and warning signage.
• Handle administrative tasks connected to health and safety.
• Participate in health and safety committee meetings and management discussions whenever safety issues are being considered, including during the launch and execution of new projects.
• Support environmental protection awareness and propose ways to strengthen it across the organisation.
• Monitor industry environmental practices and identify suitable green initiatives for implementation.
• Develop environmental protection policies and operating procedures.
• Implement environmental measures and prepare reports required under Mauritius environmental legislation.
• Work in line with health and safety KPI targets.

Experience and qualifications

• 1 to 3 years of experience as a Health & Safety Officer in a manufacturing setting.
• A degree in Occupational Health & Safety from a recognised institution is required.
• Background in the textile sector will be considered an added advantage.
• Ability to communicate in Hindi.
• Comfortable using computers.
