Job description

Company Overview

AGORA Energy Technologies Ltd., headquartered in Vancouver, is a forward-thinking engineering company pioneering CO2 capture, conversion, and utilization technologies. The company is globally acclaimed for its innovative energy storage solutions like CO2 Reductive Capture and CO2 Redox Flow Battery Technologies, earning notable accolades including the NRCan’s Energy Innovation Program-Carbon Capture Grant 2025, Grand Winner at Hello Tomorrow France, and the Cartier Women’s Initiative Award. With a focus on breakthrough battery chemistries, AGORA fosters an agile, startup-like environment perfect for enterprising professionals.

Role Summary

The position entails contributing as an individual and collaborative member of the research and development team, focusing on battery chemistry, stack design, development, and scale-up for cutting-edge redox flow battery tech. Candidates will be responsible for transforming concepts into viable production systems.

Candidate Requirements

  • Must hold Canadian citizenship, permanent residency, or possess valid work authorization.
  • Academic qualifications include a Ph.D. or M.Sc. in Chemical Engineering, Materials Sciences & Engineering, or Electrochemical Engineering with at least 3 years of practical experience in flow batteries, fuel cells, or electrolyzers.
  • Strong theoretical and applied expertise in electrochemistry, including AC/DC electrochemical analytical methods related to battery technologies.
  • Experience with materials characterization techniques is advantageous.
  • Proven track record in resolving fundamental scientific questions, reflected by high-impact peer-reviewed publications and intellectual property contributions advancing the field.
  • Hands-on experience in designing and prototyping products within batteries, fuel cells, or electrolyzers is essential; familiarity with redox flow batteries is a plus.
  • Knowledge of catalyst synthesis, deposition procedures, and electrode production methods such as spraying, electrodeposition, spin coating, and Dr. Blade coating.
  • Experience working with battery testing stations and stack evaluation.
  • Strong communication skills to effectively discuss and present technical and scientific concepts.
  • Programming skills, especially in Python and LabVIEW, are highly preferred.
  • Experience in CO2 utilization research or applications is beneficial.

Responsibilities

  • Active involvement in developing flow battery cells and stacks: innovating materials, electrode formulations, electrolytes, membranes, system design, and performance testing.
  • Lead various technical projects and assume project management duties.
  • Use engineering models and tools to create and improve stack and component designs, integrating with existing company tools and knowledge bases.
  • Generate intellectual property and contribute toward building a portfolio of innovative ideas and proof-of-concept demonstrations within AGORA’s technological landscape.
  • Align engineering efforts with business objectives and address business-critical problems.
  • Independently generate solutions by initiating and steering research projects from idea through execution.
  • Evaluate and support new business ventures by providing technical validation within the energy storage sector.
  • Exhibit strong project leadership and manage multidisciplinary research teams effectively.
  • Forge cooperative relationships with internal teams, clients, and academic partners.
  • Partner with senior engineers to design diagnostic experiments for root cause identification and remediation.
  • Maintain compliance with quality standards, regulatory requirements, and best technological practices.
  • Demonstrate self-motivation, organization, and proactive initiative in a dynamic workplace.
