Role Overview
The Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) Specialist plays an essential role in cultivating a strong safety culture and ensuring strict adherence to EHS standards across the Castlebar and Swinford locations. This role offers technical expertise, leads key EHS initiatives, and collaborates across departments to promote ongoing enhancements in safety performance, environmental protection, and risk management.
Key Duties
- Develop, implement, and continuously improve EHS policies, procedures, and programs.
- Maintain compliance with national, local, and corporate EHS regulations and ISO management systems.
- Provide regulatory guidance to leadership, engineering, operations, and support teams.
- Assist in preparing, reviewing, and submitting all required EHS reports at regulatory and corporate levels.
- Manage hazardous and non-hazardous waste programs, including vendor oversight and legislative compliance.
- Assess environmental impact of new processes, equipment, and projects, supporting permitting activities.
- Conduct audits and enforce corrective actions as needed.
- Support risk assessments and controls for equipment, tasks, chemicals, and ergonomics.
- Review EHS implications of changes to equipment, processes, and facilities.
- Carry out routine inspections, GEMBA walks, and internal audits to verify compliance and identify improvements.
- Lead or assist in incident investigations with thorough root cause analysis and prompt corrective/preventive actions.
- Coordinate Emergency Response Team activities including training, drills, and preparedness.
- Foster a culture focused on accountability, ownership, and continuous safety improvements through communication and coaching.
- Track and report key EHS performance indicators to highlight trends and progress.
- Contribute to corporate and site-specific EHS improvement projects and cross-functional teams.
- Document, monitor, and promote safety observations to enhance hazard awareness and reduce risks.
Professional Qualifications and Experience
- Degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Health and Safety, or related EHS field.
- At least five years’ experience in an EHS capacity within manufacturing or similarly regulated industries.
- Proven track record managing or supporting EHS programs, including training, risk evaluations, and compliance protocols.
- Familiarity with ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 standards is preferred.
- Excellent communication, analytical reasoning, and problem-solving abilities with the capacity to influence all organizational levels.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, prioritize multiple tasks, and meet deadlines.
