About the role
This full-time position is with Lumibility, an organization that began in 1957 when three families came together to create support options for children with intellectual and other disabilities. Today, it operates as a person-centered provider serving more than 1,200 children and adults.
The Direct Support Professional will work in a day program environment, offering supervision, practical support, and training to people with differing abilities. The goal is to help build social skills, encourage positive behaviors, strengthen abilities, and support community participation.
Pay: USD 19.50 per hour
Schedule: Monday to Friday, 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM, for 40 hours each week; non-exempt
Location: Westbrook
Key responsibilities
- Supervise, guide, and instruct participants in assigned day service settings, which may include direct oversight, personal care, medication support, behavioral support, help with competitive employment, and job training.
- Plan and carry out person-centered activities that support positive progress and meaningful outcomes.
- Keep medical, social, and program records current by tracking progress and preparing required documentation such as goals, attendance, behavior tracking, progress notes, and quarterly or annual reports.
- Provide transportation for participants while following Lumibility’s safe driving rules and practices.
- Protect the health, safety, and well-being of individuals in line with each service plan and agency procedures.
- Build respectful, positive working relationships with participants, families, coworkers, and community partners.
Requirements
- A high school diploma or equivalent is required; an associate degree or bachelor’s degree in a related area is preferred.
- Some understanding of learning and behavior processes is helpful.
- Applicants must be at least 18 years old.
- A valid Connecticut driver’s license is required, along with an acceptable driving record.
- You must be willing to use your own vehicle for Lumibility business in line with company policy.
- Knowledge of person-centered, outcome-focused services for people with differing abilities, along with familiarity with agency policies, regulations, and community resources, is preferred.
- Ability to carry out programs and activities outlined in an individual support plan.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in a courteous, professional style.
- Capability to support the physical and personal needs of adults with differing abilities, solve problems effectively, maintain confidentiality, and use adaptive or other equipment.
- Physical ability to sit, stand, and walk for long periods; bend, stoop, kneel, balance, climb, reach overhead, push, pull, squat, and crouch as needed.
- Must be able, with assistance, to lift, carry, and position individuals of varying weights, including lifting up to 50 pounds occasionally.
- Must be able to drive multi-passenger vehicles for extended periods during the day.
