Role overview
As a Data Center Inventory & Asset Technician in Microsoft’s cloud operations organization, you will support the flow of inventory and assets inside a data center environment. The role centers on cycle audits, inbound and outbound deliveries, vendor escort coordination, and careful documentation of all movements of equipment and materials. It also offers exposure to inventory control, warranty handling, and secure destruction of data-bearing devices.
This position sits within Cloud Operations & Innovation (CO+I), the team that powers Microsoft cloud services and the infrastructure behind products such as Bing, Office 365, Xbox, OneDrive, and Azure. CO+I emphasizes growth, training, career rotation opportunities, diversity and inclusion, and professional certifications. Microsoft operates a large global data center footprint across more than 200 data centers in 32 countries, supporting over 1 billion customers and 20 million businesses in more than 90 countries.
The company highlights sustainability, operational efficiency, and a culture built on respect, integrity, accountability, inclusion, and continuous learning.
What you will do
- Handle assigned work, and raise issues quickly when activity volumes are high or when situations require escalation.
- Work with suppliers on warranty claims and manage failed vendor hardware through the RMA process, including processing, packing, shipping, and receipt tracking in line with SLA commitments.
- Use established procedures and sound judgment to complete work with limited day-to-day supervision.
- Keep focus on how each task affects tickets and inventory/asset management work.
- Maintain accurate records across inventory systems, including configuration databases and asset repositories.
- Carry out detailed physical inventory control, staging, and tracking.
- Identify inventory mismatches and help reconcile and report discrepancies.
- Destroy data-bearing devices according to SLA requirements and Microsoft policy when needed.
- Flag stock shortages and other concerns to management promptly.
- Follow security and data-handling rules at all times.
- Support and reflect Microsoft’s culture and values in daily work.
Requirements
- High school diploma plus experience in warehouse, supply chain, inventory management, retail, warehouse operations, or a related field within an IT environment.
- Equivalent practical experience may be considered in place of the formal education and experience combination.
- Ability to work scheduled shifts outside standard business hours, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Must be able to meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening standards for the role.
- Must be willing to complete the Microsoft Cloud background check at hiring/transfer and again every two years.
- Preferred: 2+ years of experience in warehouse, supply chain, IT, or logistics within an IT setting, including operation of heavy-load movement equipment such as forklifts, pallet jacks, or chassis lifts in a large organization.
