Role Summary

The Damage Prevention Tech is a full-time, on-site position in Hamilton, Ontario. The job centers on carrying out utility locates at residential, commercial, and municipal sites to help avoid underground utility strikes. Core duties include reviewing locate requests, reading utility maps and drawings, using locating equipment to detect and mark underground lines, and preparing accurate field notes and reports. The role also requires regular communication with site supervisors, contractors, and internal staff to confirm job details, explain markings, and address safety-related concerns.

Key Duties

• Review and interpret locate requests before attending job sites.
• Use utility maps, site plans, and technical drawings to understand underground infrastructure.
• Operate handheld and electronic locating tools to identify and mark buried services.
• Complete clear, precise field records and documentation after each locate.
• Communicate with supervisors, contractors, and internal teams to clarify scope and job requirements.
• Explain locate markings and raise safety concerns when needed.
• Drive to multiple locations around Hamilton and surrounding areas.
• Work outdoors in changing weather and site conditions while following safety procedures.
• Follow company standards as well as applicable health, safety, and regulatory requirements.

Qualifications

Applicants should bring experience or training in utility locating, construction, civil work, or a similar field, with a strong emphasis on damage prevention and site safety. The role calls for the ability to read and interpret utility maps, site plans, and technical drawings, along with the discipline to produce accurate field documentation. Comfort with handheld tools and electronic locating equipment is important, as are troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities.

Additional Requirements

A valid driver’s license with a clean driving record is required, along with the ability to travel between job sites in and around Hamilton, Ontario. Candidates should have strong communication and customer service skills and be able to work respectfully with clients, contractors, and teammates from different backgrounds. The position requires the ability to work independently outdoors and to walk, bend, and lift as needed. Attention to detail, dependability, and a commitment to safety regulations, company procedures, and industry best practices are essential. A high school diploma or equivalent is expected, and additional certifications in utility locating, OH&S, or construction safety are considered an asset.
