About the Role

Job Summary

This position involves overseeing the operations of designated Aquarium galleries, live exhibits, and related infrastructure. You will supervise a team of Husbandry staff and volunteers, providing training, scheduling, project oversight, protocol development, staff evaluations, and ensuring workplace safety. You are responsible for maintaining the highest standards of animal welfare and exhibit presentation. As part of the Husbandry Operations Management Team, you will also share in managing a staff of about 50 and supporting the complete onsite animal collection. Specific responsibilities may vary depending on the assigned taxa, galleries, and exhibits.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage a team of Husbandry staff and volunteers, conducting regular one-on-one meetings and annual performance reviews. Supervise hiring, training, coaching, career development, and promotion processes.
  • Plan and coordinate daily and weekly work schedules and gallery assignments to ensure smooth operations.
  • Develop, revise, and oversee operational protocols for assigned exhibit galleries to maintain optimal animal care.

  • Manage collection planning annually and on an ongoing basis to maintain appropriate stocking and authentic habitat representation aligned with interpretive messaging.
  • Collaborate across Aquarium departments to coordinate maintenance, repairs, and projects. Act as liaison between Husbandry Operations and other teams, including overseeing contractors affecting related areas.
  • Supervise live exhibit development projects such as renovations, new installations, repairs, and improvements.
  • Contribute to overall management of the Husbandry Operations team, advising senior management regarding policies, promotions, compensation, strategy, and culture; oversee husbandry workgroups as needed.
  • Assist in budget planning, management, and expense oversight related to animal care and infrastructure upkeep in coordination with senior Animal Care leaders.
  • Represent the Aquarium externally through media, presentations, industry panels, and contributions to professional groups such as AZA committees.

Preferred Qualifications & Knowledge

  • Bachelor's degree in biology, marine science, aquarium studies, or a related discipline.
  • SCUBA certification including Open Water 1, Advanced Diver, and Rescue Diver; occupational or scientific diving authorization is preferred.
  • Ability to pass a diving medical examination.
  • At least 10 years of progressive experience in AZA-accredited or comparable institutions managing live animal collections and exhibits.
  • Minimum 5 years of direct supervisory experience with animal care personnel.
  • In-depth knowledge of the mechanical, chemical, and biological filtration processes in aquarium systems.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the natural history and ecology of habitats showcased in the Aquarium.
  • Expertise in animal behavior, captive husbandry principles, and welfare standards within AZA-accredited settings.
